I’ve become increasingly fond of the music of Young L, aka one fourth of the Pack and the guy behind one of last year’s best mixtapes. But the Bay Area rapper/producer has been somewhat quiet lately, likely due to the fact he was prepping his latest release. It’s called Enigma Theory and it finds Young L spitting — and sometimes Auto-Tune crooning — over his own hazy, synth-drenched instrumentals that sample the likes of Wye Oak, Sea of Bees, and Mr. Hudson. It all makes for a wholly cohesive and enthralling listen from one of hip-hop’s most unfortunately glossed-over artists. Trust.
