Young Black Preachers – Lunch Special III [LP]

I don’t remember exactly where I first heard of Young Black Preachers. It was 2009 and it was their EP. And I probably found it from a blog. But if Young Black Preachers are new to you, hopefully you remember that you read about them on the blog that mimics the roads of America (unnecessarily complex reference to Potholes In My Blog used in blog post is scratched off my bucket list).

I was drawn to YBP by their crackly sample-based beats. They were jazzy, filled with horns, breaks and all that good hip hop shit. Their new album, Lunch Special III, is brimming with similar sounds but it seems two years really helped them grow into their style even more. This is what I’ll call “psychedelic rap.” Studio effects, vocals that sound a bit detached, it all amounts to a group you should be paying attention to.
