As you might have heard, the 2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards were filmed last night. And as you also might have heard, there were plenty of great and terrible things that happened. Up above, you can see one of the former occurrences, as Fat Joe and 50 Cent put their differences aside to pay their respects to the late Chris Lighty. It’s admittedly one of those, “Well, why did it have to take the death of their friend to make them realize their feud was stupid?” situations. But who hasn’t been there before, whether it’s a friend, loved one, or family member?
Of course, they also filmed the cyphers, which are always the main reason you’re probably watching the awards in the first place. I have a few issues with the lineup, for example why didn’t they include Jay Rock and just have a Black Hippy cypher? Honestly, though, these should be nothing if not wholly entertaining, and I’m looking forward to doing a full report on them for y’all once they air.
But now, onto the horrible side of the filming. Apparently Rick Ross and Young Jeezy got into it—they’ve been beefing for ages, in case you didn’t know—and they even apparently shoved each other. While the mental image of these guys pushing each other as they shout obscenities is hilarious, but here’s where the humor ends: gunshots rang out in the parking lot outside of the venue. Yeah. Ugh. It’s all fun and games thinking about the Bawse getting all riled up, but remember this: these dudes run with some gully-ass dudes. Like, actually gully, not the kind that just rap about it and open Wing Stop locations.
Here are some witness accounts of the near-violence:
Alright, here’s what happened: ross & Jeezy got into an actual shoving match in the parking lot. A man w/a gun was arrested. #HipHopAwards

Now, that wasn’t the only instance of idiocy. Gunplay, aka the most animated member of Maybach Music Group, got into his own fight with a member of 50 Cent’s crew. Thankfully, nothing happened that lived up to the MMG rapper’s alias, but he did apparently get jumped by G-Unit’s Kidd Kidd. MTV reports that multiple witnesses saw Gunplay all battered and bruised, though now we’re seeing video of Gunplay dropping of the G-Unit dudes before getting pepper-sprayed by police officers.
Shit, all of this nonsense must be why they decided to film the awards show 10 DAYS PRIOR TO ITS AIRING. Seriously, you can shoot a movie in 10 days—OK, that might be a stretch—but they can’t get an awards show ready to air in less time than that? Ridiculous, though maybe it’s necessary when you have so many hotheads in the same place at the same damn time.
Anyway, you can watch all the absurdity go down Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. You can also spoil it, if you want, at the BET site.
