A certain Chicago artist has a handsome hit on his hands. Atop production channeling the ambient, electro-paced thrill of his recent touring partner Disclosure, Vic Mensa crafts a jackhammer of a track with the potential to bust the mainstream wide open – ironic, considering that track’s title.
“Down On My Luck” sees Mensa exchanging his often-employed rapid raps for innovative melody to yield astounding results. A true creative with proven singing capabilities, the hip-hop artist lazily labeled a Chance-knockoff by many listeners strikes gold like never before. Radio ready yet deceptively complex, “Luck” is the ultimate balancing act for a young emcee looking to raise his stock to the next level. And perhaps several notches beyond that.
Every great song deserves an equally impressive video; director Ben Dickinson delivers, smoothly stitching together a series of reoccurring events that slowly progress forward. Daps, drinks and dancing fill the screen as Mensa corrects past moments, eventually avoiding with success punches, spiked drinks and a careening truck.
