St. Vincent, the futuristic guitar shredder and artistic visionary once known as Annie Clark, soared to new, nationally televised heights with her debut performance on Saturday Night Live. Dressed in black with her instrument of choice in hand, Clark flawlessly performed “Digital Witness” and “Birth In Reverse” without even the slightest strand of failure.
Her ability to maintain such balance and composure is what struck me the most, executing various, deliberate gestures to emphasize certain moments in each song. Without apparent difficulty, Vincent pulls her hands back to the strings of her filtered guitar – a smooth transition, and all while stretching her vocal limits.
