Kendrick Lamar debuted a new untitled song on Comedy Central’s ‘Colbert Report’ tonight as the final musical guest of the show, as part of finale week. Colbert interviewed Kendrick for the first part of the video. They discuss his Compton roots, Dr. Dre, fame, and why he prefers to be called a writer instead of a rapper. The performance starts at the (4:05) minute mark.
Similar to when “I” was released, Kendrick’s new song is slightly left field in comparison to his previous work. In fact the new untitled song, which is produced by Astronote, sounds like something from early 90’s Digable Planets for its spoken-word, and jazzy aesthetic sonically. Backed by Anna Wise (from Sonnymoon), Bilal, Terrace Martin and Thundercat, Kendrick spits; “What the black man say? Tell ‘em we don’t die, we don’t die, we multiply“, at the end of the song. Can’t wait to hear the studio version of this, along with his sophomore album next year.
