J. Cole continues to be the thinking man’s rapper. His latest album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive release served to cement the North Carolina rapper’s position within the best working young rappers in hip-hop. J. Cole’s production really shines on this track. Thumping drums and pounding bass operate in stark contrast to the colonial setting found in the Lawrence Lamont-directed visuals.
J. Cole takes on the role of a house slave tending to his ‘masters needs much to the disgust of his contemporaries. A moving video which perhaps encourages the viewer to draw modern day parallels with Cole’s current artistic plights. Considering Cole’s involvement and appearances during the Ferguson protests this past summer, this new direction in his music isn’t too surprising. Cole remains poignant and thought-provoking as ever.
