Watch El-P and Killer Mike Respond to Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” Verse

So it’s been a few days since Kendrick Lamar pretty much shook the rap world with his verse on Big Sean’s “Control” and caused a bevy of rappers to respond to his claims of being one of the best and the king of New York. Personally, I haven’t really kept up with the replies aside from those we posted by Joell Ortiz and Lupe Fiasco. Why? Because I’m already kind of tired of the whole thing and would rather listen to the original song or something else entirely (like Doris).

But I digress.

The team at NE Hip-Hop caught up with Killer Mike and El-P, who together form Run The Jewels, and wanted to know their take on the situation. As soon as the interviewer asks his question, it’s clear that El, too, is tired of all this. He doesn’t cut the discussion short or anything like that, instead he commends Kendrick for what he calls a “dope verse” and then states that he and other rappers, like Mike, have been doing this kind of thing for years.

El goes on to say the following: “Me and Mike, we listen to that shit, and we laugh, like yes. Other motherfuckers are sitting there sweating. Not us. We’re just like, cool, we got another one on our team.” Mike also notes that the whole competitive nature of Kendrick’s verse is what hip-hop is about and what they’re about. As he says, “I got the name ‘Killer Mike’ ’cause I killed like seven kids, I ripped their heads off [in a freestyle battle].”
