Rafiq Bhatia first caught our attention when Sons of the Morning remixed his stunning cut “Sunshower“. Since then, the jazz guitarist has exploded onto the underground scene with an album that is unlike anything we have heard before. It is called Yes It Will, a challenging piece of music that tests the limits of jazz as we know it. Rooted deeply in be-bop, Bhatia uses his guitar to take the listener places it wouldn’t usually go.
Today, we continue our exploration of Bhatia’s sound, this time celebrating his live performance that took place on Feb. 4 at Glasslands in Brooklyn. The footage that we are premiering is of Rafiq and his band throwing down “Sunshower”, the composition that first made us believe in this fine musician. Joined by Jeremy Viner on saxophone, Alex Ritz on drums and Jack Hill on electric bass, Bhatia plays a more improvised version of the originally recorded work. And we are pretty excited about that.
