Video: Frank Ocean’s 2013 Grammy Performance

frank ocean live Video: Frank Oceans 2013 Grammy PerformanceAfter bagging a few awards during the show, Frank Ocean made his debut on the Grammy stage despite, you know, that cut on his hand. And instead of going with a more obvious choice like “Thinkin’ ‘Bout You” or “Pyramids”, he choose Channel Orange burner “Forrest Gump“. It made for an … interesting performance, partially because of the fact that it sounded kind of flat and never really went anywhere. Personally, I can dig how it was understated and the fact he didn’t EMOTE! like almost everyone else, but still. Anyway, I think “Pyramids” would have tore the place up.

Peep the performance below.

ok. so nothing blowing you away! which is the way it should be at the grammies, but art happens when it happens; didn’t happen here. He is a talented artist though

He couldn’t have done really ANY other song without editing the lyrics. Thinkin’ Bout You- about sex. Pyramids- About a prostitute. Crack Rock- duh. Pilot Jones- drug dealer. Pink Matter- Sex again. I would’ve loved to see him perform Lost- but he says tits like 4 times in that song. America has the FCC. They can’t broadcast that shit. Quitcha bitchin’.

I prefer forrest gump to pyramids for a crowd pleaser, and I actually liked the sparse-ness of that performance, but a downtempo rendition of lesser known track will rarely raise the roof. I thought pyramids was REALLY underwhelming on SNL, love the song, but it’s just too long and meandering to hook you in with a cut down 3 min version. Thinkin’ bout you was truly breathtaking however. He’s a true talent.

What the hell was that??!! This is the pinnacle of music? the Grammy’s… What the heck happened to real music??? I thought I was being punked for a second?! Is Ashton Kutcher going to pop out of that screen at some point and finally reveal this charade? Give me some Judas Priest Pain Killer, some Hendrix, Pink Floyd or almost anything else that’s actually music… This is a Saturday Night Live scetch at best!??

That was horrid. I hope it was due to him – as I’ve seen it said already – “giving as much a fuck about the grammys as do the grammys about music”.

Boring. I was really looking forward to his performance and was highly disappointed.

There’s a time and a place for a subdued performance like that, but when you are essentially closing out the Grammy’s when a high percentage of folks watching had probably barely heard of you, is not one of them.

I didn’t watch it but I’m sure he gave 110% and earned his orange slices go tigers!

Definitely not his best performance. Pyramids would have been the better choice but I think he was just trying to make a statement.
