As the debate around indie R&B straggles along, Red Bull took the initiative to dive in and find the origins and makeup of the buzzing genre. This is the first episode of a series called H∆SHTAG$, the filmmakers round up some of indie R&B’s most flavorful artists. We are talking people like Zodiac, Miguel, BADBADNOTGOOD, How To Dress Well and more. In turn, we get to take a look at how the genre has grown over the years, and how it has used the Internet to differentiated itself from past forms of mainstream R&B.
Besides a developmental look at the subgenre, we also get to see how these artists feel about terms like “PBR&B” and “hipster R&B.” As expected, most of these guys don’t appreciate the pigeonholing and labeling, and it is nice to see how they combat the stigma.
