Toy Light’s newest project, The Clear EP, doesn’t fit in with that stereotypical L.A. beat scene sound, and it’s not really representative of clarity either. The four tracks here are less like rap beats with basslines that rearrange tooth fillings and more like fuzzy ambient tracks with some hip hop influences. It sounds like what would happen if a producer got tired of scouring crates full of vinyl and dead skin particles, and instead mined an Explosions In The Sky album. In place of the dissected crooning of some middling soul singer with one single, you hear guitar strings and crunchy background noise that’s just as important as the snares. Not fitting a stereotype works.
