I have to admit, I wasn’t terribly sure what to make of Chaz Bundick’s second foray as Toro Y Moi. Something about Undernearth the Pine‘s disco-esque groove just didn’t click with me at first compared to my instantly falling for his debut, Causers of This. But then, I (and a certain someone) heard Toro’s sophomore record over the weekend while relaxing in a hotel room and all of my preconceived notions drifted away. The danceable textures and absolutely killer beats pulled me in as tracks like “Light Black” bounced from my speakers. If you aren’t convinced yet, perhaps you just need to check out this footage of Bundick and company performing “Light Black” in the KCRW studio. Hearing the song unfold in a live setting makes it that much more compelling, even if I’m so full from lunch that the idea of dancing is making my stomach hurt.
