Tony B. aka Tony Bonanza is fortunately for us, not a rapper with a mafioso alter-ego that Nas would be proud of but a guy making that good ol’ hypnagogic pop (word to 2009 terminology). On his Baby B. EP, vocals are rare and when they do appear they’re featured more as an instrument than a vehicle for some pressing message, about the virtues of Veganism or how riding the school-bus as a kid sucked. They add to the foggy feel of the whole, with words being echoed and extended like they were originally half-groans. Old drum kits check in and stay a while, as do synthesizers that appear and make a scene as they tend to do. And there’s a song called “Kurt Rambis”, which is all you really need to know.
