Happy be anything except yourself day! Halloween is a time for strangeness and raised-eyebrow stares, masks and fake brains, and stepping outside the normal if only for 24 hours. It’s refreshing when risks get taken to make things weird in a good way (see the new Atlanta wave happening right now with Young Thug, Makonnen, Rome Fortune, etc.) and this track takes no half-steps on the road to weirdness.
Usually more bluesy than woozy, The Bad Tenants linked up with Seattle live hip-hop stalwarts Theoretics to pay tribute to the truly bizarre on “Paper Mache.” Sharp writing and flows tiptoeing backwards through swamps both get posted up in an eerie cornfield like your favorite scarecrow. The backing instrumental is sufficiently spooked, hollow wailing sounds, psychedelic keys tinkling around… everything sounds like a haunted house. Nothing about it is scary. It’s more curious—the way you feeling walking around your house in the dark when you hear a sound you don’t recognize. The track goes bump in the night. So make it bump tonight.
