Thelonious Martin – COLORS [Album Stream]

Young producer Thelonious Martin has managed to put up an absurdly impressive resume with the quickness- there’s not a ton of 19-year-old kids with this kind of pedigree, having worked with Hodgy Beats, Action Bronson, Kid Daytona and a slew of others. As it turns out, there’s not a ton of 19-year-old kids with production chops like his, either, as demonstrated on his new album, Colors.

Featuring ten tracks of dusty, spaced-out instrumental boom-bap with names corresponding to different areas of the visible spectrum, Colors absolutely slaps. Nods to the great producers of yore abound, with the occasional Dilla siren sound and chipmunk-speed soul vocal sample, but the kid keeps it all moving at a jazzy, loping pace, and by the time you drop into the funk from the Mahavishnu-esque fusion breakdown that starts “Purp”, young Thelonious Martin will definitely be carving out some space on your playlists for a while.
