rundown copy The Weekly Rundown (Sept 7 14)

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.

  1. Phonte/Nicolay don’t want you to buy City Lights 2: Shibuya from iTunes. We shouldn’t be surprised since iTunes has pulled shit like this before. But it’s still a damn shame that they have messed up this release. Just make sure to hit up Amazon, Rhapsody, e-Music, etc… to pick this one up. I (Marty) have spun it a few times and it’s absolutely worth the money. And be on the look-out for a review this coming week.
  2. Jay-Z – Answer the Call concert @ MSG. Incredible concert for a worthy cause.  Jay-Z and a number of guest appearances from the likes of John Mayer, Mary J. Blige, Kanye West, Kid Cudi & Rihanna. They, put simply, rocked MSG for the 9/11  benefit concert.
  3. Raekwon OB4CL2 Release Party @ Santos, NYC. We wish we could have been there for the festivities. If the party was even one-tenth as good as the actual album, it was probably ridiculous. Peep the video and pretend you were lucky enough to attend.
  4. Conversations with Jay-Z on BET. Interviewers Harry Allen, Angie Martinez and Stephen A. Smith discuss numerous topics including what keeps Jay-Z motivated as a businessman and an artist with the recent Blueprint 3 release. Very dope interview.
  5. Royce 5′9 - Street Hop tracklisting. With DJ Premier executive producing and offering some beats, we have faith in Royce delivering another solid record. Lookin’ forward to that cut with Phonte and the Bun B and Joell Ortiz features.
  6. M.O.P. beat jacking? Not again. First Charles Hamilton now M.O.P. On a track on the forthcoming Foundation on track called “Rude Bastard” the beat is not credited to the actual producer. It’s a shame because it been a while since we had a M.O.P. release and for it to be marred in controversy is just wack.
  7. Black Keys are releasing a hip-hop record? The line-up looks INSANE. We are definitely fans of what the BKs bring to the table and this should be a dope project. Blues-rock riffs and drums paired with some of the best emcees is a killer combination.
  8. Murs working on leaving Warner Bros. We’re not sure exactly what this means for him, but his record on WB, Murs For President, was definitely solid and let him reach a wider audience. Maybe Rhymesayers should just pick him up.
  9. Tweet of the week: The #1 spot goes to HexMurda; “Look, when Dilla or Denaun do “sloppy” drums,it’s dope. When u do “sloppy” drums, the shit is just sloppy.”…lmao!

its no surprise murs’ trying to leave WB, whenever i hear dudes like him, pac div, blu, j*davey sign with majors i just laugh to myself. why do it? they gunna consistantly push your shit back, it might get shelved, and overall you might get a few more people to hear your music, but in the end you may make just as much money with them as you did on the indy, though the front end might be nicer. hope everything works out for him. my head almost exploded when i heard about the black keys workin with some of my favorite emcees, they are prob my favorite workin rock band not named the mars volta. as for next week i’ll only be coppin that Kamaal, i cant support the gullies on the strength of jackin that beat, georgia and dudley gettin way to insular for their own damn good, i dont like insturmental hip hop albums (sorry nic) and everybody else i am not a fan of. yes i said it, i am not a fan of buck and krs past their primes

@frank_bE I agree about the dope underground artists singing to major labels. I’m always like against it. The upfront money is nice, but the return on investment is only profitable for the machine and less for the artist. You get an album that a few more people get to hear but the creativity is packed and watered down at best.

That Black Keys album is definitely and interesting one to check out. I’m with you on the Krs & Buckshot release. I heard the joint with Mary J. Blige produced by Black Milk let’s just say we didn’t post it.

    Thanks for the comments.
