Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.
- VIBE Magazine ceases operations. After 16 years in business the urban music magazine has ceased operations. It’s not too surprising to anyone these days when a magazine or newspaper folds. But that doesn’t mean it’s still disappointing and a continuing sign of how shitty the industry has become.
- R.I.P. QB Steve McNair. In a very sad turn of events former Tennessee Quarterback Steve McNair was killed yesterday in an apparent murder-suicide along with a young woman. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this time.
- Michael Jackson returns to the Billboard charts. After the tragic death of the music icon last week, his music sales have dominated billboard charts again. Sadly, death is one hell of a promotion tool.
- Drake officially signs with Young Money/Universal. After a bidding war with Warner, Universal, Def Jam and Interscope, Drake opted to sign with Lil Wayne’s Young Money imprint on Universal. Does this mean Baby will be featured on a Drake song? NOOOOOO!
- Q-Tip To Release Kamaal the Abstract in September. Although most of us have already heard this album through bootlegs and advances, we can all agree it deserves to see the light of day. And it doesn’t hurt that more people will get the chance to hear it.
- MJ’s passing inspires Mase to make a comeback. Welcome back….again? What comeback number are we on now? I swear this is his third attempted comeback. Stay out of the news or release a damn album.
- The Game Apologizes To 50 Cent, Interscope. What an attention whore…lol People will say anything for to keep their name in the press. The Game now says he got a phone call from Michael Jackson during his beef with 50 Cent to squash things. How ironic that this surfaces after his death? We don’t believe you, you need more people © Jay-Z
- Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 has been delayed AGAIN! Seriously Raekwon, this is getting annoying now. His album has more delays than a airport terminal. He might have to leak it at this rate.
- Queens Street Named After Jam Master Jay (of Run-DMC). A nice memorial for the late Jam Master Jay. His murder still is unsolved; thank you NYPD. R.I.P. Jam Master Jay.
- Album Releases next week:
- Royce Da 5′9″ – The Revival EP
- Alchemist – Chemical Warfare
- Chali 2na – Fish Outta Water
- J Dilla – Dillanthology 2
- Lushlife – Cassette City
- Cage – Depart From Me

I must admit, I’ve never read a single issue of Vibe (or XXL or King or anything else of the sort), but I’d always had the idea that they played a prominent role in the promotion of pop hip-hop (Wayne, Jeezy, 50, GGGGG-Unit, etc…). And of course they were pivotal in actually getting hip-hop thrust into mainstream and everyday culture, but I still hold a sense that they definitely went about it the wrong way, and are partly to blame for the public’s often adverse view of hip-hop. Is this true or am I misled? Also, if it is true, I must say that as sorry as I am for all those people losing their jobs, especially in a time like this, I am still happy to see Vibe go.
The Game really said he got a phone call from Michael Jackson? That’s a jaw-dropper…dude is working hard to hit new lows every day.
Agreed, DJ MSP, The Game really, really needs to cut the shit. Expect another headline from him in next week’s rundown.
