The Slakadeliqs – The Other Side Of Tomorrow [Album]

As anybody who heard The Weeknd’s 2011 output can attest to, a public co-sign from Drake is essentially promotional gold. While it remains to be seen whether Drizzy has impeccable taste or is just fortunate enough to have enormously talented friends, he shouted out another relative unknown this week in The Slakadeliqs, an alter-ego of versatile Toronto producer Slakah The Beatchild.

The Other Side Of Tomorrow is a bright, sunny, acoustic guitar-based pop record with a staggering array of visible influences- sometimes it sounds like Ben Harper took a whole bunch of acid with a stack of Lenny Kravitz records (but, you know, cooler than that), other times it’s D’Angelo going through a serious Beach Boys phase, and still others it sounds like Chicago getting swagger lessons from Prince. Perhaps most impressive about The Other Side Of Tomorrow is its ability to take fifty things that don’t sound cool at all in theory and make a very cool record- the guilty pleasure index here is off the charts, and the regular pleasure index is surprisingly high.
