Multi-genre singer-producer Christian Berishaj bounced around the industry for several years, releasing music under different aliases before finally saying “screw it” and going independent. His decision led to one of 2012’s most intriguing R&B-tinged projects, Priscilla, which served as his debut as JMSN. In the months following the album’s January release, he would take a gigantic step by finding his way into the tight-knit circle of Top Dawg Entertainment.
This led to collaborations both musical and vocal on Kendrick Lamar’s stunning debut, good kid, m.A.A.d. city. Yet, unbeknownst to most of us, there was something much bigger brewing between JMSN and another member of the TDE crew. That would be Unit 6, his forthcoming joint album with Ab-Soul. We received a hypnotizing taste of the effort last summer with “Nibiru“, a thrilling piece exploring the Mayan Calendar.
We recently caught up with JMSN via e-mail and chopped it up about Unit 6, how he connected with TDE, what’s next for him musically, and much more.
