The Great Debate: OFWGKTA (Results Posted)

Let’s face it, whether or not you believe in them, every time you browse the web, you are going to read and hear about this group. And chances are you have found yourself choosing sides the past few months while trying to figure out if they are the next big thing. That’s right, I’m talking about Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, the group of young rappers, producers, singers, etc… that has taken the world by storm, one profane punchline and provocative video at a time. With Tyler, The Creator’s first week sales for Goblin coming in at 50,249 units sold, a respectable but not earth-shattering number, we thought it would be worth discussing the aura surrounding the young collective.

Is this crew of upstarts just a fad? Or will the members of Odd Future be able to turn the hype — and their major label distribution deal — into lasting careers? Jump over to our Facebook page where you can get in on the discussion.

We will post the results from Facebook tomorrow for you all to reflect on (names and pictures will be blurred, no worries about privacy). This is the first of many discussion posts you can expect from Potholes in the future, so get your master debater cap on, it’s about to get ugly!

  1. mike G is the best performer. Domo has the most ‘mainstream’ rap style.
Tyler is the most charismatic & polarizing figure, clear leader and he makes dope beats. Earl is the best rapper. Frank Ocean steals girls hearts and sonic virginities. Hodgy has the most energy. Left Brain is the best producer. Syd is the mixer/DJ and now can sing in the project with Super 3 called ‘the internet’. JOAT is some crazy space jazz – can appeal to a whole different audience.
Taco & Jasper keep you entertained with some ignant shit, & Young Nigga comes thru lookin clean.

Out of all OF, Frank and Tyler have shown a lot of promise as performers. Frank has already done a lot work in the industry writing songs for Bieber and beyonce. Tyler has the personality to stay relevant for a long while, as long has he keeps releasing videos that are provocative.

Earl clearly has the most talent with lyricism and delivery, and while he continues to hone his craft, he’ll grow to be at least an underground leader.

Left Brain is a breath of fresh air on the production side. If he starts working or artists outside of OF he could make a bigger impact.

Good stuff. Like all rappers, growing up will effect their music the most. The teen angst that is fueled by their music can only burn for so long. It will be different when they get older in the way they sound and carry themselves. Out of all of them I think Frank Ocean’s career has more longevity. But hey, what do I know right?
