It is hard to go wrong with a Shigeto remix, especially when he takes to an artist like Evenings. We were certainly fans of his Yore LP, and now we are happy to see some extended buzz on the full-length today. Chopping up vocal samples and tip-toeing gracefully over floating synthesizers, Shigeto brings new light to this already stellar single.

What happens when a bunch of our favorite producers get together on a single project? Well, you get S.Maharba: Remixed, the brilliant new remix (duh) album that centers on the music of S.Maharba‘s (double duh) self-titled debut. You know, it’s kind of crazy that we’re only just NOW hearing this, considering said debut album dropped in 2008, but I can’t complain when names like Shigeto, Mono/Poly, Mike Slott, and Dibia$e are involved. But the best part? The bonkers remix from a cat I hadn’t heard of before: Pyramid Juke.

You know, I had a feeling Shigeto had something in the works to celebrate J Dilla‘s birthday after he posted last night that he had something special brewing. Sure enough, the drummer/producer has delivered the Beats 4 Dilla project, which compiles a series of collaborations he crafted with the likes of Skywlkr, Mux Mool, Devonwho, and Josef Deas. The nine tunes on here run the gamut from nighttime-ready head-nodders to brash throat-punchers, with the latter applying especially to Shigeto’s second cut with Skywlkr.

Shigeto – “Huron River Drive” (Elaquent Remix)

Like us, Elaquent named Shigeto’s “Huron River Drive” as one of the best songs of 2012. But seeing how I’m not a producer, I couldn’t pay tribute to the beautiful cut by remixing it. That’s where Elaquent comes in. The Ontario, Canada-based producer has transformed the tune into a certified head-nodder, slappin’ drums and all. There’s also a killer transition about halfway through, as additional layers weave in and out of the groove.

Shigeto Announces Tour Dates With Bonobo

After the big news surround Bonobo’s new album announcement and upcoming tour, we now hear that Shigeto will be joining the journey for several dates. The marriage makes pretty perfect sense, actually, as their niche and fanbase intertwine seamlessly. Top 25 Instrumental Albums of 2012

Our criteria for the top instrumental albums this time around fall more in line with the concept of a true LP—which is why some of our favorite artists like Shlohmo, Onra, Ryan Hemsworth, and TNGHT‘s offerings appear on our Best EPS of 2012 rather than this list. Here we have our top 25 instrumental entrees if you will, spearheaded by two of electronic music’s finest and the inimitable Brainfeeder label. There are also strong showings from Detroit, Canada, and Philly, with legendary artist and producer Karriem Riggins leading the way for Detroit with his stellar debut solo album, Alone Together.

Geography aside. From calm, mesmeric collages to stark, feverish synth-laden seances, each album serves as a wordless emotional solvent waiting to be activated by a new listener. We hope you enjoy. x

Sun Glitters and Shigeto are two artists that get quite a bit of shine on our site, but rarely do they join forces. Until now, though, as Shigeto breaks loose with an absolutely funky remix of one of Sun Glitters’ newest releases. “Mouth” was great in its original state, but goodness gracious has Shigeto done some work on it. Rarely do we get to hear this producer tear it up like this, but we are sure happy he did. Give the killer remix a spin below, which can be purchased over on Bandcamp.

Yesterday, we brought you our first 50 picks of the year’s best songs. And today, we’re wrapping up perhaps the most difficult list we have had to create. There are have been so many great singles, non-album tracks, loosies, leftovers, etc… in the past 12 months. But still, we dug through our posts and iTunes libraries to compile what we believe are the best tracks to drop this year. You will find plenty of Potholes favorites—from Kendrick Lamar to TNGHT to BADBADNOTGOOD—populating our choices along with a few artists that might surprise you.

The Best Album Art of 2012

In an age in which physical copies of music and record shops continue to fall by the wayside, album art is not only sustaining, but evolving on all fronts creative, collaborative, and interactive. Since the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band with its cut-out inserts and iconic imagery in 1967, album art has remained an indelible part of an artist’s identity and music as a culture.

Our picks for the top twenty album covers this year range from classics in the making—see Kendrick Lamar‘s family photo cover with ScHoolboy Q‘s scrawled message, “A Short Film By Kendrick Lamar”—to lavish daydream-inducing artwork like that of Captain Murphy‘s, which perfectly depicts Fly Lo’s alter ego in all of its titanic glory.

Much of the album art on this list serves as an extension of the artists themselves. The stylized shards of broken glass that form the image of a bird on El-P‘s Cancer 4 Cure album cover serve as an archetypal symbol of the artist and also as a companion piece to the artwork for El-P’s sophomore album I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, whose central theme was the phoenix on fire. Both covers were designed by kinetic sculptor Alexander Calder and are based on a drawing that Calder gave to El-P as a child.

The list includes two covers designed by Stones Throw artists including Charles Munka (Oh No) and the label’s art + web director Jeff Jank (Jonwayne), the illustrator behind Quasimoto and designer for nearly all of Madlib’s work. There’s also new art from Australian art director Leif Podhajsky (Young Magic), a favorite of Tame Impala, Lykke Li, and Shabazz Palaces. Adult Swim’s influence on the list is unmistakable, with work from Atlanta-based Adult Swim designer Trey Wadsworth (Killer Mike) and Adult Swim’s own creative director Jacob Escobedo (The Shins), who quite possibly also had a hand in the incredible artwork created for the deluxe edition of Duality.
