Jay-Z and Roc Nation Sign With Universal

After penning a deal with Warner/Chappell for publishing not long ago, it looks like Jay-Z is making another move with Roc Nation. While the details haven’t fully emerged, it looks like Jay is taking his label over to Universal Music Group. While Roc Nation will retain the freedom and flexibility of an indie, it appears Universal will have the rights to much of Roc Nation’s artists like Rihanna and Shakira, and even Jay-Z. Still no word on new music from Hov, but perhaps he is getting his affairs in order before he makes his next power move. [via]

In the latest bit of industry news, it appears that Jay-Z has inked a deal with Warner Music Group’s publishing arm, Warner/Chappell Music. This contract also includes the work of songwriters on his Roc Nation label. According to Forbes, Warner/Chappell can immediately begin administering Hov’s music from 2008 to now, with the majority of his discography being available at the end of the year.

Here’s what Jay said about signing the deal and his relationship with Warner publishing executive Jon Platt.

“The real meaning of success is being in the position to work with an individual you consider a friend. Jon Platt is such a person. He’s a man of extraordinary character as well as a remarkably talented executive with an ear for music and an eye for talent. It’s great to watch him grow to be one the best in the business.”

In additionally great news for Jay, he’ll be in complete control of his master recordings and his publishing rights come 2014. That’s when a previous contact with Def Jam expires and he stands to make some serious bank. It’s not like he didn’t before, but damn.

M.I.A. Signs With Roc Nation Management

With a record deal on Interscope already, M.I.A. has bolstered her credentials even more by signing a management deal with Roc Nation. Since her sophomore record Kala back in 2007, M.I.A. has struggled to maintain the same critical acclaim in her music. With that said, she has been able to keep her name in the headlines. Let’s just hope this move also means some more refined tracks from the eccentric female artist. M.I.A. is prepping her fourth full-length effort Matangi for a fall 2012 release via Interscope Records.

Along with the announcement, Rihanna welcomed M.I.A. to the team with a wholesome tweet:
