The Foreign Exchange – “Maybe She’ll Dream Of Me”

The Foreign Exchange The Foreign Exchange Maybe Shell Dream Of MePhonte and Nicolay are back with their lead single “Maybe She’ll Dream Of Me” off their upcoming new album Authenticity. After giving us the Grammy nominated Leave It All Behind the new song picks up right where they left off with the last album. “Maybe She’ll Dream Of Me” is a smooth and soulful track. Did I mention Phonte is rapping on this new joint? Nicolay adds some great production as does Zo! on the piano. Their new album Authenticity drops Oct. 12. Check out the new song and let us know what you think.

YahZarah – “Why Dontcha Call Me No More”

Yahzarah YahZarah Why Dontcha Call Me No More

YahZarah recently dropped her latest album, The Ballad of Purple Saint James, and, damn, let me tell you it doesn’t disappoint. The entire project is an extremely well-produced trip through funk, soul, R&B, and even rock that can get your booty shakin’ or eyes cryin’. From ballads to foot-stompers, YahZarah has you covered on this record. The lead single is actually a fine representation of that fact, too, as “Why Dontcha Call Me No More” features a huge hook, moody breakdowns,  and driving production. I wasn’t sure how the track would translate visually considering all the directions that could have been taken, but godDAMN did they choose the right route with this one. Matt Koza, who shot previous Foreign Exchange videos, takes us back to the ’80s with ridiculous wigs, insane make-up, and outrageous outfits.

Hit the skip to check out the video and I dare you not to laugh at Nicolay and Phonte. Good luck.

The Foreign Exchange’s Road to the 2010 Grammy’s

The Foreign Exchange The Foreign Exchanges Road to the 2010 GrammysThere are not many albums that have dropped in the past few years that I have played as much as the Foreign Exchange’s Leave It All Behind. Sure, a big reason for that was I was going through a rough break-up and could easily relate to all of the sentiments expressed through the LP’s lyrics. But it went beyond mere relation to the emotions expressed both vocally and instrumentally. Phonte and Nicolay with the help of YahZarah, Darien Brockington, Muhsinah, and others created  what was, to be blunt, a beautifully crafted, nearly perfect R&B/soul album. And while the Grammy’s are kind of a crock, the awards committee still makes some fine choices now and then. Most notably, they nominated the Foreign Exchange’s “Daykeeper” for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. While they lost to Maxwell (who also deserved the nod), hopefully next year they will bring the gramophone trophy.

Hit the jump to watch a mini-documentary outlining just how the Foreign Exchange got to the Grammy’s along with an acoustic performance of “I Wanna Know” and “Daykeeper”.

YahZarah Why Dontcha Call Me No More 300x300 Download: YahZarah Why Dontcha Call Me No More [mp3]Words by Phonte & Nicolay; “Nic and I are proud to present the debut single from YahZarah’s The Ballad of Purple St. James LP.  Working on this album cost us a lot of time and effort (and damn near cost me a kidney…lol) but I can’t think of any single person whose humility and raw talent deserves it more. We sincerely thank all of you for your support, and as always, thank you for listening.”

Yahzarah was an integral part of the Leave It All Behind LP by The Foreign Exchange. With Phonte and Nicolay on the boards I have high hopes for her debut album. The new single “Why Dontcha Call Me No More” is relatively upbeat sonically considering the lyrics. Bad relationships always seem to inspire artists to create good music and this song is no different. Please give it a spin and let us know what you think. Props to FE

Grammy Nomination For The Foreign Exchange

The Foreign Exchange - Leave It All Behind The Grammy nominations were announced earlier this week. The regulars like Beyonce, Kanye West, Jay-Z and U2 were all nominated in their respective categories.  Among the R&B nominees this year is The Foreign Exchange in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance category for their song “Daykeeper”. I’m usually pessimistic about award shows in general because rarely do the deserving artists win or even get nominated for that matter. However, to see Phonte, Nicolay – independent artists with very little urban radio support get nominated is pretty amazing. Whether they win or not remains to be seen. But if this nomination brings some exposure to the the great music they’ve been making and continue to make, that is still a success.

Congratulations to Phonte, Nicolay and the entire Foreign Exchange collective on their nomination. The Grammy Awards will be announced January 31st, 2010. We wish them the best of luck and we’ll continue to support them on our blog.

Concert Review: The Foreign Exchange (B.B. King’s Blues Club, NYC)

As long as The Foreign Exchange is performing, no one can ever even think about showmanship being dead. The eight-piece band that took the stage of B.B. King’s Blues Club & Grille on Oct. 23 moved the crowd in a way that few acts are capable. And it all started at 1 a.m. As such, you would think a show starting that late would lend itself to a somewhat less-than-energetic audience. But that was simply not the case – I mean, this is New York City we’re talking about.
