J Rocc just released a very dope teaser from an upcoming project called Share My Bed. The first track combines Michael Jackson’s acapella of “Butterflies” over Slum Village’s “Players”. The result is Dil Jackson – Player Has Butterflies. Peep the new joint and let us know what you think. Props to Stones Throw

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.
- The title-track from the upcoming Michael Jackson documentary: This Is It is released. It sounds like some vintage MJ. The track was originally recorded in the early ’90s and will be featured on a two-disc companion set.
- David Banner, 9th Wonder & Twista anti-violence awareness. After writing a column about hip-hop and violence in the urban community, it’s really good to see some activism in the wake of the recent death of Derrion Albert and increasing youth violence in Chicago. Hopefully this will encourage other community organizers to take positive steps against the violence.
- New Shafiq Husayn EPK, new album in stores. Shafiq talks about the bubbling music scene in Los Angeles and Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner, the bass player who on his new album we recently reviewed. Read the rest of this entry »

- DJ AM tribute by DJ Premier & DJ Jazzy Jeff. A fitting tribute for a fallen soldier. DJ Riz and Eclipse were also on hand to bless the turntables in honor of DJ AM. (R.I.P.)
- The Blueprint III leaks online, so does OB4CL II, now both will be dropping on 9/8. From what we have heard (and played over and over), Rae’s definitely got the better album. The Blueprint 3 will sell more copies, sure, but we hope it will receive at least some form of competition at record stores from OB4CL II.
- Mayer Hawthorne drops another new remix and debuts in the top 10 on itunes! Big congrats to Mayer on this one. It’s refreshing to see an album as good as his crack the iTunes Top 10. As for the remix, well, Astronote has done it again his second take on “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out”. Cop the album! Read the rest of this entry »

- Jay-Z brings Oprah to Marcy Projects, confirmed guest for show. “And the streets say Jigga can’t go back home. You know when I heard that? When I was back home.” © Hov

Here are two live videos from Flying Lotus’ set at the Red Bull Space in New York City a few days ago. One of the best live DJ performances I have ever seen, hands down. The guy packs so much energy and passion into his music, it’s truly unbelievable. Check it out as he runs through some album cuts, random mixes and a quick Michael Jackson tribute…

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.
- Mayer Hawthorne debut album A Strange Arrangement gets a release date and a pre-order. It’s easily the first Stones Throw release we’ve anticipated in a number of months.
- Q-Tip is working on a tell-all book called Industry Rules. The new book is supposedly autobiographical and frankly, we can’t wait to read it. “Industry rule #4080, record company people are shady” © Q-Tip
- Dave Chappelle puts on a free show in Oregon. Is he ever going to officially come back? We understand the fame and all that was bothering him. But come on, Dave, the comedy world is weak as hell without you. Read the rest of this entry »

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.
- MJ Tribute in Los Angeles. Finally a worthy tribute for the late music-icon. Usher, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and others were on hand to give Michael Jackson a classy, heartfelt memorial at the Staples Center this past Tuesday. RIP MJ, you will be missed.
- Jay-Z premieres Blueprint 3 intro in CT. Jay-Z gives the CT crowd a dose of the BP3 intro that mentions The Game, Jimmy and Dame. The wordplay on this intro is incredible. BP3 can’t here sooner.
- The Game releases another Jay-Z (diss) – I’m So Wavy? The Game has been baiting Jay-Z for about four years now and it appears that the gloves are now off. To be honest his diss track packs enough punch to make fruit punch. It just doesn’t strike fear at all. Read the rest of this entry »

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.
- VIBE Magazine ceases operations. After 16 years in business the urban music magazine has ceased operations. It’s not too surprising to anyone these days when a magazine or newspaper folds. But that doesn’t mean it’s still disappointing and a continuing sign of how shitty the industry has become.
- R.I.P. QB Steve McNair. In a very sad turn of events former Tennessee Quarterback Steve McNair was killed yesterday in an apparent murder-suicide along with a young woman. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this time.
- Michael Jackson returns to the Billboard charts. After the tragic death of the music icon last week, his music sales have dominated billboard charts again. Sadly, death is one hell of a promotion tool. Read the rest of this entry »

With the tragic passing of music icon Micheal Jackson, many musicians have begun making tributes to the late MJ. The Roots and Erykah Badu did a MJ tribute this week on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The covered the Jackson 5 classic; “I Wanna Be Where You Are” in case you missed it. Props to The Soul Dojo

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.
- Michael Jackson passes away at 50. The King Of Pop died of cardiac arrest on Thursday. The whole world is in mourning over the loss of MJ. He is the most important artist of this generation and his music continues to touch lives.
- Will.I.Am’s manager punches out Perez Hilton in Toronto after the MMVA’s. You can’t continue to trash people on a daily basis and think that that negativity won’t come to you. We don’t condone violence, but don’t write cheques your ass can’t cash.
- The Roots Debut Their New Single “How I Got Over” On ‘Jimmy Fallon’. The new single sounds ridiculously dope. We are really digging the upbeat vibe and obvious James Brown influence. We’re hoping for a few more leaks like The Legendary did for Rising Down because October is way too far away. Read the rest of this entry »
