Aloe Blacc & The Grand Scheme – “Billie Jean”

Aloe Blacc Aloe Blacc & The Grand Scheme Billie JeanPersonally, I’m probably going to give Thriller a spin today. Maybe Bad, too. And Off The Wall. Or maybe one of those several tribute mixtapes that dropped last summer. But all I know is I probably won’t create any Michael Jackson tributes as dope as this. To honor the King of Pop’s passing, Aloe Blacc linked up with the Grand Scheme to cover “Billie Jean”. But rather than try to recreate the magic of the original, Blacc and the band put a bluesy, soulful spin on the track to craft one of the best covers I’ve heard. If only I had an mp3 version of this…

The Weekly Rundown (Oct 12-19th)

rundown copy The Weekly Rundown (Oct 12 19th)

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.

  1. The title-track from the upcoming Michael Jackson documentary: This Is It is released. It sounds like some vintage MJ. The track was originally recorded in the early ’90s and will be featured on a two-disc companion set.
  2. David Banner, 9th Wonder & Twista anti-violence awareness. After writing a column about hip-hop and violence in the urban community, it’s really good to see some activism in the wake of the recent death of Derrion Albert and increasing youth violence in Chicago. Hopefully this will encourage other community organizers to take positive steps against the violence.
  3. New Shafiq Husayn EPK, new album in stores. Shafiq talks about the bubbling music scene in Los Angeles and Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner, the bass player who on his new album we recently reviewed.

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.

  1. DJ AM tribute by DJ Premier & DJ Jazzy Jeff. A fitting tribute for a fallen soldier. DJ Riz and Eclipse were also on hand to bless the turntables in honor of DJ AM. (R.I.P.)
  2. The Blueprint III leaks online, so does OB4CL II, now both will be dropping on 9/8. From what we have heard (and played over and over), Rae’s definitely got the better album. The Blueprint 3 will sell more copies, sure, but we hope it will receive at least some form of competition at record stores from OB4CL II.
  3. Mayer Hawthorne drops another new remix and debuts in the top 10 on itunes! Big congrats to Mayer on this one. It’s refreshing to see an album as good as his crack the iTunes Top 10. As for the remix, well, Astronote has done it again his second take on “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out”. Cop the album!

Video: Flying Lotus Live Set (Red Bull Space, NYC)

Here are two live videos from Flying Lotus’ set at the Red Bull Space in New York City a few days ago. One of the best live DJ performances I have ever seen, hands down. The guy packs so much energy and passion into his music, it’s truly unbelievable. Check it out as he runs through some album cuts, random mixes and a quick Michael Jackson tribute…

  2. Q-Tip is working on a tell-all book called Industry Rules. The new book is supposedly autobiographical and frankly, we can’t wait to read it. “Industry rule #4080, record company people are shady” © Q-Tip
  3. Dave Chappelle puts on a free show in Oregon. Is he ever going to officially come back? We understand the fame and all that was bothering him. But come on, Dave, the comedy world is weak as hell without you.

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.

  1. MJ Tribute in Los Angeles. Finally a worthy tribute for the late music-icon. Usher, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and others were on hand to give Michael Jackson a classy, heartfelt memorial at the Staples Center this past Tuesday. RIP MJ, you will be missed.
  2. Jay-Z premieres Blueprint 3 intro in CT. Jay-Z gives the CT crowd a dose of the BP3 intro that mentions The Game, Jimmy and Dame. The wordplay on this intro is incredible. BP3 can’t here sooner.
  3. The Game releases another Jay-Z (diss) – I’m So Wavy? The Game has been baiting Jay-Z for about four years now and it appears that the gloves are now off. To be honest his diss track packs enough punch to make fruit punch. It just doesn’t strike fear at all.
