As promised, production duo Friendzone have delivered their latest project. It’s the third entry in their Kuchibiru Network series, which serves as a showcase of both their material and the work of their close musical friends. Included on the free release are Ryan Hemsworth, Skywlkr, Main Attrakionz, Silkky Johnson, and Julian Wass. Red Bull Music Academy’s killer HASHTAG$ series continues today with an in-depth look into the latest trends in hip-hop, particularly the sub-genres of “trill-wave,” “cloud rap,” and “swag rap.” It features interviews with notable acts like Main Attrakionz, Flatbush Zombies, and SpaceGhostPurrp, among others, along with some musical journalists like the homie Shamz at OkayPlayer. If you are even slightly interested in those acts or how hip-hop has changed over the years because of the Internet, you need to watch this.

I never liked the genre name “cloud rap.” It’s not that the name itself is a poor description of what it’s describing–blissed-out sounds from producers like Clams Casino and Keyboard Kid–but instead it’s pigeonholing an artist into a hyper specific genre. It’s too dismissive. Chillwave, witch house, cloud rap, it all sounds like an attempt to box in an artist before they have a chance to really develop. Not to mention, the moment a trend is established and named, it usually has a short shelf life before the music world’s A.D.H.D. mindset sprints onto the next train.

This brings us to Main Attrakionz, the duo MondreM.A.N and Squadda B from Oakland. Main Attrakionz built up a steady buzz last year thanks to the damn good 808 & Dark Grapes II mixtape featuring rising stars A$AP Rocky and Clams Casino. It was so good that the indie label Type decided to pick it up and press some physical copies on vinyl. So, this brings us to, Bossalinis & Fooliyones, the “debut” album from Main Attrakionz. At this point their style is well-established, so it makes sense that their debut album follows the path they have already carved for themselves.

Main Attrakionz showcase the laid back demeanor of classic West Coast hip-hop, but aren’t shy about their influence from guys like Pimp C and Clipse. They are hip-hop in 2012, rooted in their home city, but directly linked and influenced by everything around them. The straight-up funk of “Liquor Runs” and “La Piñata” would make DJ Quik happy. The Syrup-drenched goodness of “On Tour” is a clear tip of the hat to Southern gods UGK. “Superstitious”, arguably the album’s high point, features a guest verse from Gucci Mane, whose lazy flow over a minimal burner works in the most enjoyable way possible.

While Squadda and Mondre implement a tour of different styles on this record, they aren’t shy to be the flag bearers of their own rap movement. Tracks like “Cloud Life” and “Cloud Body” are all the reasons 808s & Dark Grapes II was so successful in the first place. And, on Bossalinis & Fooliyones these types of airy tracks don’t lack any potency a year later. Bossalinis & Fooliyones is about as good a debut album as Main Attrakionz could have come with. They’re maintaining the method of success of their previous mixtapes without coming off remotely stale. Cloud rap might sound like a genre set to fade out within the next 12 minutes, but with Squadda and Mondre continuing their quality output, I’d say it’s here to stay.

We’re just one week away from the release of Main Attrakionz‘ new album, Bossalinis & Fooliyones. While one could argue that the “buzz” surrounding the Oakland duo and their cloud raps has cooled, I’d argue otherwise. They’re still all over the damn place and receiving plenty of attention. It’s just that they’re no longer the “new” thing, which, honestly, is perfectly fine with me. Everyone else can keep hopping on whatever trend they want while MondreM.A.N and Squadda B will do what they do best. Stream the album below. [via]

Blunted, heady Bay Area rappers Main Attrakionz deliver the latest single from their upcoming album, Bossalinis & Fooliyones, today with “Cloud Body”. As the track and the MCs make very clear, this is another entry in the so-called cloud rap sub-genre. It’s also a celebratory, feelin’-good anthem from the duo, who sound great over Grown Folk’s hazy, slow-building production. [via]

Potholes Music Releases BK Beats & PBZ’s ‘Time Is Of The Essence’ EP

September is a big month for us at Potholes Music and it rolls on with another strong release from our roster. This time, it’s from Albuquerque, N.M.-based producer BK Beats and his close friend/frequent collaborator PBZ. Together, they have crafted a cohesive, 10-track release in the Time Is Of The Essence EP. In addition to showcasing their ever-evolving talents as producers—particularly on cloud-rap jam “HOME” and vibrant opener “Carlton Dance”—the project features guest vocals from some choices MCs.

On “Soul Fly”, which rides out on its own, you’ll hear a collage of rhymes from Charlotte, N.C.’s Deniro Farrar, Detroit’s Boldy James, and Oakland’s Shady Blaze. Together, they bring complementary and rugged verses across BK and PBZ’s trunk-rattlin’, guitar-laden canvas. Elsewhere, Bay Area rap duo Main Attrakionz keep it languid and introspective on the ethereal “My Only Wonder”.

100s – Ice Cold Perm [Album]

You may remember 100s from his track, “Passion“, on which he rapped impressively about having a “hungry gut,” but if this doesn’t sound familiar you can start here with his debut, Ice Cold Perm. The cover is inspired by the artist formerly known as something much better than Snoop Lion, but I don’t hear any Gap Band samples. Instead, the 19-year old Berkley rapper is paired with beats from Joe Wax and the result is a very good album that may cause you to sing “My activator, hoe” out loud at inopportune times.

Deniro Farrar & Shady Blaze – Kill Or Be Killed: A Prequel [Mixtape]

The always prolific Main Attrakionz have actually slowed down a bit lately when it comes to musical output. But to bring things back to speed, they prepare a more proper release by way of full-length album, Bossalinis & Fooliyones. Our first taste is the Harry Fraud produced west coast leaner, “Do It For The Bay”. With DaVinci on deck lyrically, this is one of the most polished pieces we have heard from the duo. The direction is refined from that of “cloud rap,” but we can totally get down with this, too. Bossalinis & Fooliyones is due out Oct. 23.

Art over search engines seems to be the new M.O.B. and Berekley, Calif.’s 100s could be a spokesman. A quick Google search will turn up a wikipedia page linking to an entry about a century, and also a youtube video about an “Insane Cardio Workout For Ninjas.” But “Passion” is none of these. On the track, which features Main Attrakionz, we’re told about all of the things these young rappers enjoy, which is welcome after hearing about everything a young rapper dislikes. The track is smooth, the pianos plink, the synths synth, and if any masked mercenaries are reading this in five years, I’m sorry but we have nothing for you.
