I’ve been waiting to hear new tunes from the kid KeithCharles Spacebar since he dropped Before Common Era in February 2011. Although, to be fair, he did put out that SUPERBUDDAH project with Ethereal last August. Anyway, the music gods have answered my prayers with the bizarrely titled “00 / ≠”. The track carries a heady, psychedelic vibe, what with its production that’s equal parts fuzz and silk. Stream and download it below.

OK, right from the jump, I have to give the guys of SUPERBUDDAH (ATLiens Ethereal and KeithCharles Spacebar) tons of credit accomplishing two very important tasks: First and foremost, they made me laugh my ass off with both the name of their album and its artwork, which you can peep after the skip. And secondly, and perhaps most importantly, they pulled off the concept of what it’s like to, well, Watch The Couch perfectly. This is laid-back, smoked-out hip-hop from the Dirty South at its finest.

Will – Stoned In A Stang [Album]

If you stopped by Potholes this past March, then you probably saw my gushing post on Atlanta-based newcomer KeithCharles Spacebar’s jazzy debut, BeforeCommonEra. The album played like a blunted tribute to the Native Tongues through the eyes of a talented young dude who sounds like he has one hell of a future ahead of him. The same can be said for his cohort and fellow ATL resident Will. As his latest project’s title implies, Stoned In A Slang ups the blunted ante you heard on BeforeCommonEra while referencing that uber-chill late ’80s/early ’90s sound so many of us adore. There are also hints of NYC-esque street rap (“Point A” and “Shoutout (Theme Song Pt. 2)”), Bay Area hip-hop (“N-N-Out”), and Southern-fried jazz-hop (“Do Somethin’”).

If you are somehow still snoozin’ on KeithCharles Spacebar, then please do yourself a favor and wake the hell up. Dude dropped a killer (free) project a few months back called BeforeCommonEra that’s pretty much right up all of your respective alleys. How do I know this? Because I know what you come to Potholes for: good-ass hip-hop (and some oddball electronica and indie rock). And that’s just what Spacebar delivers on his album. Don’t believe me? Then take a few minutes to peep the Chicago-based visuals for “Nu Shit” and get f-a-m-i-l-i-a-r…and catch a contact high.

Chances are that I never would have heard this dude’s music without the help of the Jet Age of Tomorrow, so, dudes, thank you for that. I’m showing particular appreciation here because KeithCharles Spacebar makes that kind of music I know you will all dig. His album, BeforeCommonEra, boasts that jazzy, blunted production reminiscent of the Soulquarians. And he rides every beat with a smooth, laid-back delivery. It all makes for the kind of music made for relaxed, mellow evenings, so throw this one on, and chilllllllll.
