k-os – The Anchorman Mixtape [Mixtape]

kos k os The Anchorman Mixtape [Mixtape]After learning of this only two or three months ago, k-os’s The Anchorman Mixtape is here. Even though I know most of you are already clicking the jump button furiously to download this project — and I don’t blame you — I still have a few things I need to say about this project. I’m beyond glad to see this supremely talented artist getting more music out there, especially as a means of promoting his upcoming and first headlining U.S. tour. And, very wisely in terms of marketing, he has linked up with fellow Canuck Drake on here. That alone should hopefully bring in some more downloads and press coverage., though k-os should have loads of that anyway. OK, I don’t want this to turn into a you-should-listen-k-os-you-big-jerks! rant.

You can stream “BlackWater” below and download The Anchorman Mixtape after the jump.

k-os – “BlackWater”

kos k os BlackWaterThis track has apparently been floating around the net somewhat secretly for the past few days, but it was just now brought to my attention. “BlackWater” represents the first leak from k-os’ forthcoming The Anchorman Mixtape, which drops this Friday. The mixtape serves as a prelude to his first headlining tour of the States that features, among others, Shad as an opening act. Yeah, I’m pretty sure if I don’t make the Oct. 31 show in Boston I’ll just give up on life. Anyway, “BlackWater” finds k-os collaborating with Sebastien Grainger, who was the drummer/singer of now defunct Death From Above 1979. As strange as it is to hear these two joining forces on a track — if only because their music is vastly different — the pairing works rather well.

Download “BlackWater” after the jump and stream it below.

k-os – “Zambony”

kos k os ZambonyFuck what you heard: k-os’ Yes! was one of the best albums of 2009, even though it was never properly released in the States. Yeah, it’s available digitally here and you might get lucky finding it at a smaller record store. But shit, this multi-talented artist goes and makes yet another awesome LP only to see it not get any love on this side of the American/Canadian border. My ranting aside, I’m hoping that all this affection for a certain Toronto rapper/”singer” will turn into the world realizing there are other very talented MCs from the Great White North. Anyway, I’m just glad to see “Zambony”, the opening track to Yes!, get a push as a single.

Top 25 Albums of 2000-2009

photo newyear2010 Top 25 Albums of 2000 2009It’s no secret that hip-hop is in constant motion – it changes year to year. Emerging technologies combined with the fickle needs and wants of the industry, the artists, and the fans, all play a role in shaping our musical world. Some of the changes to the hip-hop scene have been, well, less than desirable (see: the decline of radio rap). However, the past ten years, 2000-2009, still held releases of some of the most creative and unique hip-hop albums of all time, with an ever-expanding range of sub-genres. Traditional hip-hop rooted in the golden age of the ’90s was certainly alive and well, but it was sharing chart space with newer, progressive styles. That said, we have compiled a list of our 25 favorite hip-hop albums from the past ten years, as a form of celebrating the musical diversity in hip-hop from the decade that was.
