Potholes Music Releases Black Noi$e’s ‘$$$’ EP

We are very proud to bring you Detroit-based producer Black Noi$e‘s debut release on Potholes Music, the $$$ EP. FACT described lead single “Jester” as “uneasy” and a “treat for fans of off-kilter beats that bounce”–we couldn’t agree more. That sentiment rings true across much of $$$, a five-track foray into sounds Black Noi$e calls on as inspiration. There are distinct house and techno influences running through the EP, though hip-hop pokes its head through on closing track “Win Win”. It’s a collaboration with fellow Potholes Music artist Jay Cue, who flows effortless across the booming backdrop of chimes, hand claps, and spaced-out synths.

This is only the beginning of what will be an exciting string of releases from Black Noi$e, who is working on a joint project with go-to collaborator/Potholes Music teammate BK Beats. Additionally, expect to see his name in the production credits of upcoming releases from the World’s Fair crew, Deniro Farrar, and many others.

Big Pun – “You Ain’t a Killer” (Jay Cue Remix)

This past Feb. 7 served as the thirteenth anniversary of the tragic death of Big Pun, one of the most gifted MCs to ever touch the mic. And to pay homage to his favorite track by the Bronx native, Potholes Music’s own Jay Cue put his own spin on “You Ain’t a Killer” off 1998′s Capital Punishment. Cue takes the original’s vocals, which carry a slight hiss, and complements them with a Neptunes-esque production that finds footing in a minimalist, slight-funk vibe.

Potholes Music’s own Jay Cue is set to make his full-length debut with us in the spring. But before he does, he’s dropping off some gems here and there like the Action Bastard-produced “Shots”. It’s one of the more aggressive joints we’ve heard from Cue, who gets his braggadocio on over the hypnotic, slightly funky beat. Apparently his in-the-works project won’t sound too much like this, but I know I’m not alone in wishing we could get an EP’s worth of this material.

We were introduced to up-and-coming British Columbia producer BigCat last month when we heard his collaboration with Potholes Music’s own Jay Cue. Since then, the Canuck has been wrapping up his new album, Comatose, which we’re proud to premiere to y’all today. It finds him linking with a slew of artists we’ve posted here at Potholes, including Pyramid Vritra, Caleb Stone, and KC 2.0, all of whom ride warm, sometimes menacing beds of synthesizers and crunchy drums.

Potholes Music Releases ‘Distant Arcade’ Label Compilation

Today we’re stoked to present Distant Arcade, the first artist compilation for Potholes Music. It features brand-new tracks from each of our 12 artists including newcomer British producer B O L T S who brings his own flavor of honey-like sample flips and lighthearted jazz sentiments.

The theme of Distant Arcade is, above all, space– the cosmos, spaceship joyrides, and the like. We asked our artists to take their cues from above the stratosphere in crafting their tracks, and while the individual approaches vary, the overall discourse of the compilation is one of zero gravity contemplation.

Instrumentals are the pulse of Distant Arcade, from Danny!’s swirling opening track, “A Vibe Called Quest” to vhvl’s retro video game banger, “fkkd”. Then we have Toronto-based rapper-producer Emay, who spits self-aware rhymes over his own percussion-heavy production (“Enough of the bluffing/Now I’m separated from the mental slavery ship”), and Jay Cue, who showcases his increasingly impressive ability to coalesce singing, rhyming, and his own sharp production on track “Bliss”.

Each track contributes its own light to the gathering point that is Distant Arcade, and we hope you enjoy the ride.

Potholes Music’s own Jay Cue comes through with a fresh new cut produced by his homie Amuro, who’s laced the multi-talented artist with an ethereal/trappy backdrop. And Cue embraces that sound by showing off his talents as a rapper and a singer, something he also did on his excellent Asleep At The Keys EP. If you have somehow been sleeping on the kid, please, end that now by bumping the hell out of “Not Til Tomorrow”.

We’re proud to present y’all with the latest project from NRK’s Jay Cue, a multi-talented young cat who produces, raps, and, for the majority of Asleep At The Keys, sings. While were impressed with his raps on last year’s Pyramid Life, it’s Cue’s songwriting and sharp vocals that leave us craving even more funky future-soul from the Georgia resident. In other words: Hopefully Asleep At The Keys is just the beginning. Also, someone needs to sign this kid. STAT.

Jay Cue – “The Perfect Matchmaker” [Potholes Premiere]

When we got hipped to Jay Cue, we knew him for his braggadocio-laced rhymes and jazz-leaning production. But now, we have another reason to check for the talented young southerner. Dude’s also got some pretty strong pipes, which he puts on full display here on the bluesy, romantic “The Perfect Matchmaker”. It’s the first single off his upcoming project, Asleep At The Keys, which Cue himself said he can’t really narrow down genre-wise. As long as you keep churning out tunes like this, I don’t think we’re going to be worried about classifying your music, Mr. Cue.

Jay Cue – “Know That Feel”

Rapper-producer Jay Cue has been steadily dropping new material every so often since releasing his excellent free album, Pyramid Life, this past March. In fact, he even provided a completely exclusive space-funk production to our instrumental compilation, Midnight Snacks. And his latest tune, “Know That Feel,” actually bridges the gap between that galactic sound and the swaggered-up vibe of his full-length. He says he ain’t braggin’, but dude’s got confidence for days on here. Be sure to wait ’til the end, too. That beat-switch is massive.
