I am still a bit bummed we are going to have to sit through a mixtape re-release before we get that major label debut, but the Weeknd has now exposed us to the 30-track listing from Trilogy. The only listed features are Drake and Juicy J, leading us to believe this is going to be a rather intimate experience with Abel. If I only lived in Toronto and could somehow have found a ticket to this sold-out event at the Mod Club on July 24, I would have damn near had a heart attack. While there aren’t too many visuals around of the performance just yet, the audio that KanyeToThe copped off of a bunch of YouTube and Vimeo links makes it sound like a fantastic time. The Weeknd performed just about every song from House of Balloons, though some of the audio wasn’t good enough to make this live recording. Regardless, if this guy comes by NYC any time soon, consider me there!

This past March, Toronto based R&B artist Abel Tesfaye and producers Doc McKinney and Illangelo self-released House of Balloons under the moniker “The Weeknd”. It was well received, and the genre bending hype seemed substantiated in that elements of future garage, R&B, pop, soul, and minimalist electronic music were seamlessly blended making for a hi-fi aural experience.

The Weeknd’s upcoming album, Thursday, is posed for release sometime this summer, and is the second installment in a trilogy of albums inspired by different seasons. “The Birds (Part 1)” is presumably the first release from the aforementioned album and it’s an upbeat yet minimal tune, with a dizzying synth swirl and militaristic beat fleshing out the sonic landscape. Of course, Tesfaye’s vocals take center stage, and it’s tough to avoid cliche when describing his siren-like range and timbre.

You can follow The Weeknd via twitter here and stay up to date with info. on upcoming releases. With two more albums on the supposed docket before 2012 hits, Tesfaye will be a busy man.

Stream and download the track.

The Weeknd has been pumping out unreleased tracks to go along with the already unstoppable hype surrounding his mysterious persona. To add to the stream of promotion, there is another video (official or unofficial, there was definitely some money poured into this one) to support House of Balloons, this time for my personal favorite “The Morning”. Plenty of females in this one, a common theme for the baby-making music pouring out of Toronto right now.

Back in March, the beginnings of The Weeknd’s true hype buildup commenced with the releasing of the House of Balloons mixtape. Since then, the identity of The Weeknd has slowly been decoded. Before The Weeknd was The Weeknd as we know it, he was part of a production group known as The Noise. One of the songs they crafted was “Birthday Suit” a demo that was apparently made for Drake back in 2009. With that, we also got word last week that Drake would be working more with The Weeknd in the near future, hopefully on one of the two mixtapes that were announced to drop this year.
It seems like all of the internet is going nuts for The Weeknd’s new House of Balloons mixtape, and rightfully so. It was only a matter of time before we started seeing a bunch of remixes drop, but never did I think one would be as slick as this. While I don’t know too much about Vin Sol or Charles McCloud, what I do know is that they took “What You Need” to a brand new level of dopeness. Employing a sound that is rather similar to that of Burial (never a bad thing), these two go to work by chopping up vocals and darkening things up a bit.

I am surprised that Andrew hasn’t posted this already, seeing that it is some serious baby-making music, in the same vein as Drake’s So Far Gone mixtape. And being that The Weeknd is also from Toronto, it makes sense that this sound would be so similar. Even though The Weeknd has gained a ton of attention over the past few months with only select few leaks, there is very little known about this cat. One thing is for sure, if he continues to drop tracks like we see on House of Balloons, T-Dot might be seeing another pop icon in the near future.
