It’s no secret that hip-hop is in constant motion – it changes year to year. Emerging technologies combined with the fickle needs and wants of the industry, the artists, and the fans, all play a role in shaping our musical world. Some of the changes to the hip-hop scene have been, well, less than desirable (see: the decline of radio rap). However, the past ten years, 2000-2009, still held releases of some of the most creative and unique hip-hop albums of all time, with an ever-expanding range of sub-genres. Traditional hip-hop rooted in the golden age of the ’90s was certainly alive and well, but it was sharing chart space with newer, progressive styles. That said, we have compiled a list of our 25 favorite hip-hop albums from the past ten years, as a form of celebrating the musical diversity in hip-hop from the decade that was.

The Boston leg of Del’s Funk Man Tour rolled through The Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge. In case you have not yet heard, Del released his latest album, Funk Man (The Stimulus Package) was released for free on his website. DJ Mike Relm opened for Del and got a fairly packed crowd (especially considering KRS-One was in town on the same night!) amped for the show. He even threw in a crazy remix of the “Charlie Bit My Finger” YouTube video. Relm ended with John Lennon’s “Imagine,” just before Del and A-Plus took the stage. Clearly, since the tour is named after his newest album, I expected to hear numerous tracks off that and lots of promotion for it.

Today we welcome the legendary Musab to Open Mic Presents… Founder of one of my favorite hip-hop indies Rhymesayers, Musab makes his move to put out another classic solo LP, H.G.H. Check it out as we chat about everything from the music industry, his past work, current work and what he is listening to right now. Be sure to peep the interview, cop his latest single “Get Life”, and be prepared to go out and support the new LP, brought to you by Hiero Records…
Here is a preview, hit the skip for the full feature…
Reyn: Hey Sab, pleasure having you. How are things?
Sab: Hey Reyn, thanks for having me. Things are going great for me on a personal level, otherwise just trying to keep the boat afloat like everyone else these days.
Reyn: How did the recording process for H.G.H. go? Do you feel like this is your best release to date?
Sab: Recording H.G.H was very fun, I worked with a great group of guys and I really expanded my box on this album. I wanted to make some songs that are serious in content but come off bubbly and fun and I got there on this album. Overall I wanted the album to sound lighter this time around, something people could play straight thru and have a good time too. I can’t say it’s my best release as a whole but I know some of the songs are my best work to date. As an album will it have the impact Comparison had on Hip Hop? Probably not but that was timing, and I know it will be one of the best albums of the year…. Period.
Reyn: What is the significance for the album title, Heaven, Girls, Hell?
Sab: I chose Heaven, Girls, Hell to symbolize human existence and the problems men and women go thru together. The simple story goes God made Adam, then Eve, then they ate the forbidden fruit and now we have to deal with hell, but first we must go thru trials and tribulations together on earth that will basically sum up where we land in the end. Heaven or Hell? So the album is dealing with some of the earthly problems and joys we encounter together as man and woman.
