Guru DJ Critical Hype & EscapeMTL Present: The Art Of Guru Blends [Mixtape]

The legendary Guru of Gang Starr passed away recently. To honor his memory and musical contributions, DJ Critical Hype has put together a tribute in his latest installment with The Art of Blends series by Team Invasion. Guru’s classic vocals are blended over classic beats by Jay Dee, Diamond D, Pete Rock, Hi-Tek and others. Please give it a spin and let us know what you think.

The Weekly Rundown (May 11-18th)

rundown copy The Weekly Rundown (May 11 18th)

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.

  1. The Joe Budden versus Method Man feud continues. Both artists called into Power 105.1 and exchanged jabs this week. Why don’t they just battle it out face to face? Somebody get Don King on the phone!
  2. Super-producer Solaar proclaims the Dirty South isn’t hip-hop. Peep the 2:30-minute mark of that video. Guru’s career is tanking by the minute. How the mighty have fallen. He’s taking a page from Mobb Deep’s book on bad career moves.
  3. XXL July Cover (Soulja Boy, OJ Da Juiceman, Shawty Lo & Gucci Mane). Journalism lost if they gotta put those rappers on a cover to sell magazines. Who’s reading that? That’s the best we have to offer in hip-hop?

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.

  1. De La Soul releases collaboration album with Nike: Are You In? It’s good, but not much more than that. And hey, at least we have new De La! 45 minutes of running/sweating to the Plugs…lol
  2. Maxwell Returns after a long hiatus with “Pretty Wings” Just what R&B game has been missing. This is the first single off his upcoming album Black Summer’s Night, which will be first release in 7 years.
  3. Guru releases a new joint of his latest Jazzmatazz compilation called “Fast Lane” Monotone meets autotune???!! Somebody get DJ Premier on the phone because this is turrible! © Charles Barkley

The Weekly Rundown: March 30th – April 5th

rundown copy The Weekly Rundown: March 30th April 5th

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.

1. Guru declares; “I am Gang Starr” ??? This just in: Above-average rappers who blew up thanks to a legendary producer need to shut up. Guru’s proclamation that he was Gang Starr is insulting to everybody on this planet. Does he not realize just how much he owes to Premo? PSA: Artists who feud with the DJ/producers never win; see CL Smooth

2. RUN-DMC get inducted in to the Rock & Roll hall of Fame. Congrats to the pioneers and a R.I.P. shout out to Jam Master Jay. I wish he was still alive to see it. We look forward to another induction when hip-hop has its own hall.

3. Hamilton-gate: Charles Hamilton beat-jacking Black Spade. We’re happy to see a negative scenario produce a positive outcome. Thank you, Charles, for giving us and others a reason to play Black Spade’s topnotch To Serve With Love again.
