Pretty Lights – Spilling Over Every Side [EP]

pretty lights Pretty Lights Spilling Over Every Side [EP]Get your dancing pants on, damn it! Here we have yet another free release from the man known as Pretty Lights. And yes, I know he performs live with a drummer but its this Colorado-based produced who makes all this glorious music known as Pretty Lights. Spilling Over Every Side is his second of three EPs he has planned to drop this year and, from the sound of opening track “High School Art Class”, it’s looking like we have a winner on our hands. I might not be the most dancing-prone writer on Potholes, but give me a few drinks, blast some Pretty Lights, and maybe, just maybe, I’ll get my ass moving.

Central Services – Forever Frozen in Television Time [EP]

camu tao Central Services Forever Frozen in Television Time [EP]The first leak from this project leaked two weeks ago and if that track, “What God Should Do”, was any indication, we were in for something pretty crazy when this EP finally dropped. Well, today’s the day we finally get El-P and Camu Tao’s 2005 effort, Forever Frozen in Television Time.  This should be considered a teaser of what’s to come on Tao’s forthcoming posthumous solo debut, King of Hearts, that’s due out Aug. 17 and been in the works for quite a while. Fans of Def Jux, you already know what it is.

Oddisee – West Coast Beats [Mixtape]

trek life and oddisee Oddisee West Coast Beats [Mixtape]Trek Life and Oddisee certainly appear to be in the giving mood as of late. To celebrate the forthcoming release of Trek’s Everything Changed Nothing, which is solely produced by Oddisee, they have been doling out the freebies. First, Trek dropped catch-up mixtape Before Everything Changed that, for any newcomers, is the perfect way to get introduced to this talented California spitter. Then, yesterday, Oddisee decided to give away this free mixtape of Left Coast-inspired instrumentals called West Coast Beats. The diehards will recognize a few of the tracks from his Traveling Man project but there are also snippets of beats from Trek’s upcoming album along with several brand new cuts. In short, if you have been following Oddisee already, I’m sure you skipped all this text and immediately hit the download button.

You can grab the mixtape after the jump and stream the track “Don Cornelius” below.

Shigeto – What We Held On To [EP]

shigeto Shigeto What We Held On To [EP]The homie Theo, who has designed a ton of art for us over the past year and a half, tweeted a link to this project the other day and, after giving it a listen, I decided I needed to share it with you all. Well, at least those of you haven’t already downloaded and listened to it already. Being a fan of the Ghostly label, I was instantly intrigued but still a bit skeptical considering the fact that free downloads are sometimes free for a reason. But I was pleasantly surprised by the experimental sounds found within Shigeto’s on-the-house What We Held On To EP. Yeah, some of you will complain that it’s just another project with this “wonky” sound. But you know what? This shit has been around for a while and is only now getting some more shine so come on, relax a lil’, haters. Everyone else, enjoy.

You can download the EP after the jump and stream “Bitter Sweet” below.

Trek Life – Before Everything Changed [Mixtape]

trek life and oddisee Trek Life Before Everything Changed [Mixtape]As the prelude to his upcoming collaborative album with Oddisee, Trek Life has put together the Before Everything Changed mixtape. But rather than offer a bunch of random freestyles over industry beats as so many MCs do these days, Trek’s gone a different route. This mixtape offers tracks from throughout his career leading up to his upcoming Every Changed Nothing album. And while it doesn’t provide me with any new tracks as I’ve been a fan of Trek’s work, this is a fantastic means of getting acquainted with one hell of an artist.

Download: Chosen Few – Sounds of the Fewture [Mixtape]

Chosen Few Mixtape Front 300x300 Download: Chosen Few Sounds of the Fewture [Mixtape]Although it’s a shame their record got pushed back a few months, it actually turns out that the delay worked in Chosen Few’s favor. This trio, which exudes the jazzy/funky sounds of the West Coast with a Mid-West flair, has been prepping its long-coming debut, New World Symphony, for several years. And while it doesn’t officially drop until next month, we were able to preview and subsequently review the record, the latter of which will be posted soon. Hint: It’s pretty solid. But anyway, to preview that effort, the trio put together this mixtape/compilation called Sounds of the Fewture.  This is a must download if you’re at all a fan of the work put out by the Hiero Imperium label because, well, that’s where Chosen Few calls home. So give their mixtape a spin and, as always, let us know your thoughts!

Download: The Mad Bloggers Present: MKE’s Best – Draft & Light [LPs]

mke draft 300x300 Download: The Mad Bloggers Present: MKEs Best Draft & Light [LPs]The team at The Mad Bloggers are working on quite the ambitious (and fantastic) project with “The Journey to Hip-Hop.” Each volume will see the hip-hop site highlighting a different city, with Milwaukee obviously being the first. There are two volumes of music here, too, with tracks from the likes of Taiyamo Denku, JC Poppe, Ka$h, Dana Coppafeel, Haz Solo, and many, many others. And yes, there are two different covers for MKE’s Best to highlight the Draft and Light volumes. I don’t really like light beer, though, so that’s why I’m showing off the Draft one, haha.

Download: BUG – “Cosmic Lab” + “20 Winks” [mp3]

bug cosmic lab 20 winks Download: BUG Cosmic Lab + 20 Winks [mp3]I have to admit, I’m loving this new breed of producers utilizing the crunchy grooves of Dilla to make some of the most spaced-out, hazy beats on this side of the galaxy. The latest producer to enter this foray is BUG, who offers up his double-single of “Cosmic Lab” and “20 Winks” for free. You have to download the tracks through his Bandcamp, but you can stream them below to get a feel before you decide to take up some hard-drive space. I can’t wait to hear what’s to come from BUG and hopefully we get some more sooner rather than later.
