Closed Sessions x LRG: Freddie Gibbs Edition

Freddie Gibbs1 Closed Sessions x LRG: Freddie Gibbs EditionClosed Sessions and LRG recently met up with Freddie Gibbs before his headlining performance at the 2010 Pitchfork Music Festival. Gibbs reached out to Chicago’s rising talent YP, and the two centered on production from another windy city stand out, Million $ Mano. The documentary below shows how everything went down, and also how far Gibbs has come since being dropped by Interscope in 2008. Watch the documentary, and look for the song “Something New” to be released for free download very soon. [via]

Freddie Gibbs – Str8 Killa No Filla [Mixtape]

Freddie Gibbs1 Freddie Gibbs Str8 Killa No Filla [Mixtape]If you weren’t anticipating the hell out of this project, well, I’m sorry? As several folks have pointed out in our comment section over the past few weeks whenever I write about Freddie Gibbs: Does anyone actually dislike this guy? I mean, dude’s flow is ferocious. He can tell a hell of a story about his rough — and true — upbringing while also delivering plenty of gangster attitude throughout his bars. This is one MC that has a bright future ahead of him and, hopefully, we hear more from him sooner rather than later. Personally, I’m just glad we’re finally seeing the release of Str8 Killa No Filla as it feels like this has been delayed forever. But maybe I’m impatient.

Download Str8 Killa No Filla after the jump and stream “Do Wrong”, which features Pill, below. Props to Nah Right and XXL.

Freddie Gibbs – “National Anthem (Fuck the World)”

Freddie Gibbs1 Freddie Gibbs National Anthem (Fuck the World)I know this breed of music isn’t what you might normally see us post here on Potholes. But you know what? Freddie Gibbs is one hell of a talented MC and he’s making some damn good music. And chances are you already knew that as his previous projects, such as The Miseduction of Freddie Gibbs, have displayed his skills. Here, we have the impressive visuals for his Str8 Killa EP’s lead single, “National Anthem (Fuck the World)”. Even if you somehow don’t like the video, though, I have a difficult time believing you won’t enjoy his lyricism and that fantastic complementary production. One thing though — anyone else think Gibbs should become the mascot for people who like to throw up their middle-finger? Just a thought.

Hit the skip to view the visuals for “National Anthem (Fuck the World)”. The Str8 Killa EP drops Aug. 3 and check back here Thursday for the Str8 Killa No Filla mixtape.

Freddie Gibbs – “Slammin” (Maker Remix)

Freddie Gibbs1 Freddie Gibbs Slammin (Maker Remix)The original version of this track leaked earlier this year and fully displayed that we had much to look forward to from Freddie Gibbs’ much anticipated Str8 Killa No Filla. And as the months passed, we heard a few more leaks that displayed both this Gary, Ind. native’s tenacity (“National Anthem (Fuck the World)”) and supreme storytelling (“The Ghetto“). Now, we have a re-up of “Slammin”, a more streets-friendly anthem that is turned into a slightly more headnod-worthy affair thanks to Maker’s remix of the track. He throws organs and a clipping guitar all over “Slammin” to provide a new spin on an already fresh cut.

Hit the skip to download Maker’s remix of “Slammin” or stream it below. You can buy the mp3 or vinyl here.

Outasight – “Near the End” f. Freddie Gibbs

Outasight Outasight Near the End f. Freddie GibbsDamn, I did not expect to see these two collaborating. But after hearing “Near the End”, I am pretty damn glad they did. It’s kind of crazy how organic this pairing of completely different acts is, but hey, I can’t complain. I don’t want to say Freddie Gibbs completely steals the show either, but his verse, which arrives toward the end, is absolutely fantastic. Sure, it’s your typical shoulder-brushing bravado, but he just kills it. Outasight is no slouch, of course, as he rides the bluesy production from Table for 6 with ease. All I can say is I won’t be surprised if more than one of you blasts this during a BBQ this weekend. Hell, if you don’t, I’ll be kind of disappointed.

Column: Treat Everything Like It’s Your First Project

blu Column: Treat Everything Like Its Your First ProjectAfter so many mediocre debut albums from new rappers in the last three years I started to wonder where’s the magic that got me excited about some of these new artists in the first place? I’m not implying that all these new rappers just became bad overnight. Clearly they’re not without skill because they’ve managed to get my attention. However, lackluster product is being force-fed to us when these artists finally drop their so-called debut LP. While mixtapes continue to serve as the springboard to many a rapper’s career, those early mixtapes are proving to be highly more entertaining than the debut albums these labels are churning out.

Freddie Gibbs – “Rock Bottom” F. Bun B

Freddie Gibbs1 Freddie Gibbs Rock Bottom F. Bun B

Freddie Gibbs is back with his latest single “Rock Bottom” off his Str8 Killa No Filla mixtape. The track features Bun B with production by Beatnick & K-Salaam. “Rock Bottom” has that Southern flow, infectious hook with the perfect beat to marry it. Freddie Gibbs and Bun B both sound great on this new record as they trade verses on the trials of being rock bottom and finding a way to get back up. Check out the new track and let us know what you think.
