The Odd Future crooner took home the top honors as he received the Webby Person of the Year award. Here’s an explanation of his victory, according to a press release:

Frank Ocean, the R&B music artist, will be honored for proving the power of the Web as a medium for cultural change when he published his letter “Thank You’s” to his Tumblr. By challenging stereotypes historically engrained in the hip-hop and R&B music communities, Ocean brought a conversation about discrimination to the national dialogue. The launch of his debut album Channel Orange in parallel with the statement was a historic moment for both the music and social media industries, and for popular culture as a whole.

Agreed. As for the Webby Artist of the Year, that one went to Grimes. She was honored “for a deep understanding of the Internet as not only a distribution platform for her music and art, but as a social tool to connect with fans through candid, meaningful dialogue.”

Well, sort of. They inquired about where the project stands and it led to Frankie explaining that when he was recording Channel Orange, he listened to a lot of Stevie Wonder and similar artists. But now, he’s been up on the Beatles and Beach Boys, which he said might trickle down into his next album. Considering you could definitely hear Stevie all over CO, it’ll be interesting to hear how the Beatles and Beach Boys could work their way into Frank’s writing.

Of course, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce made it on the list, but we are also surprised to see artists like Frank Ocean and Miguel making an appearance. Along with a ranking, each artist got a slick writeup from some other influential figures, such as Mayor Bloomberg, Stevie Wonder and John Legend. Check out some excerpts from the list below. [via]

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg wrote of Jay-Z:

[Jay-Z's] an artist-entrepreneur who stands at the center of culture and commerce in 21st century America, and his influence stretches across races, religions and regions. He’s never forgotten his roots — “Empire State of Mind” was a love song to our city — and as a co-owner of the NBA Nets, he helped bring a major league sports team back to Brooklyn, not far from his old neighborhood. In nearly everything he’s tried, he’s found success. (He even put a ring on Beyoncé.) And in doing so, he’s proved that the American Dream is alive and well.

Stevie Wonder wrote of Justin Timberlake:

I think it’s a great thing when you do the most you can with the time you have in life. Justin has accomplished a lot at a young age, taking advantage of all the possibilities, and yet he’s found time to give of himself too — he gets and gives back. He has a spirit. He does God’s work through using the most of his talent.

Douglas Wolk wrote of Miguel:

The survival of the black pop tradition isn’t just a matter of preserving its history — although Miguel does that too: the soul seducer’s Grammy-winning hit single “Adorn” ingeniously evokes Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” and “Let’s Get It On”. What has nourished that tradition over the past 70 years, though — what has kept it not just alive but thriving — is what makes Miguel’s recent music so special: constant innovation, formal daring, unexpected sources of inspiration, and emotional directness.

John Legend wrote of Frank Ocean:

How fitting that he released his “declaration” on Independence Day. I think Frank’s career will be defined by his fearlessness and his artistic freedom. He has the talent, the ability and the brilliance to have an impact for a long time. He will follow his muse wherever it goes — he’s not the kind of artist to adhere to everyone else’s schedule. That’s what makes him special.

The kid can add another trophy (well, a plaque in this case) to his wall, as his Channel Orange single “Thinkin’ Bout You” has officially gone platinum. Just like with album sales, that means he’s pushed a total of 1 million units of the track since it officially dropped last year. My only thing is, where can you purchase this track as a single? Unless I’m completely losing it, you can’t buy it on iTunes as a “single”, though you can clearly purchase the track by itself. Yeah, that must have been how it happened. [via]

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT AN ANNOUNCEMENT OF AN ACTUAL ALBUM(S) BUT A NEW FEATURE IN WHICH WE OUTLINE A PROJECT(S) WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE HAPPEN.

After hearing that James Blake’s forthcoming Overgrown album would sport features from Brian Eno and RZA, we couldn’t help but imagine what other artists would have great chemistry with the UK singer and producer. With something to offer for just about every fan of music, James Blake’s sound is rooted in everything from soul and R&B to dub-step and hip-hop. Which makes him such a stellar candidate for this installment of Armchair A&R.

On the list you are going to see a number of notable names as well as rising stars, including everyone from Janet Jackson to AlunaGeorge. And, of course, let us know which artists you wish would hop in the studio with James Blake in the comments section.

We’re now seeing footage of him rehearsing “Forrest Gump” days before the show and absolutely nailing it. So yeah, his nerves got the best of him, but man, he also bagged a few awards and you know, dropped one of the best albums of 2012 with Channel Orange. Suffice to say, we think he’ll be perfectly OK.

You can watch the rehearsal below.
