Toronto, Where Is The Love?

Toronto skyline

I’m lucky to live in one of the best cities in the world. However, the hip-hop scene in Toronto while not lacking in talent is still struggling in some ways.

  1. R.I.P. Baatin of Slum Village. The details surrounding his death are still unclear since we received the news yesterday. We just lost another founding member of Slum Village. It’s also sad because Slum Village were set reunite for the a new LP dropping in September. Our condolences go out to his family at this time.
  2. Jay-Z replaces The Beastie Boys at the All Points West music festival. He covered the Beasties classic “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” then sequenced into “Brooklyn (We Go Hard)”. The video footage is dope.
  3. Drake injured during concert fall. An episode of Degrassi or real life? He really does have a bad knee…lol

The Weekly Rundown (June 29 – July 6th)

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.

  1. VIBE Magazine ceases operations. After 16 years in business the urban music magazine has ceased operations. It’s not too surprising to anyone these days when a magazine or newspaper folds. But that doesn’t mean it’s still disappointing and a continuing sign of how shitty the industry has become.
  2. R.I.P. QB Steve McNair. In a very sad turn of events former Tennessee Quarterback  Steve McNair was killed yesterday in an apparent murder-suicide along with a young woman. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this time.
  3. Michael Jackson returns to the Billboard charts. After the tragic death of the music icon last week, his music sales have dominated billboard charts again. Sadly, death is one hell of a promotion tool.

The Weekly Rundown (June 1-8th)

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.

  1. Jay-Z releases D.O.A. – Death Of Auto-tune. The song has a “Stakes is High” feel to it circa ’96. Production wise it’s incredible, but lyrically this is more of the conversation starter and not exactly the ending of anything.
  2. MTV Movie Awards stunt was staged says Eminem. Does he really need to do stunts like this? Eminem is pushing enough units without balls in his face. One word: PAUSE!
  3. Little Brother is all but done, but will work together in future projects. This is depressing news, of course, but it’s good to know they will continue collaborating. Also, we get the feeling this is only a temporary break, but we’ll see. At least we still have The Foreign Exchange.
