Dr. Dre Column: Confessions of a Detox ApologistAs the news came out last week that Dr. Dre’s long-awaited album Detox was pushed back yet again, this time to 2011, hip-hop fans, myself included, experienced a few emotions.  The weary, brave-hearted Detox apologists said, “Oh well, we can wait. We’ve waited this long, it will be worth it.  Everyone who has worked on it said it’s going to change the game!”  The smug, arrogant brand of hip-hop lover who never really listens to Dr. Dre anyway looked down their collective noses through their oversized non-prescription glasses and said, “Ha! We knew it would never come out! And even if it does, it’s going to suck anyway!”

rundown copy The Weekly Rundown (May 25th June 1st)

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.

  1. DJ Houseshoes gets his laptop stolen. It’s a pretty sad story because there were a bunch of J Dilla rarities on that laptop. Hopefully he backed up all the music that was stolen.
  2. NBA Playoffs: Lakers/Orlando are in the NBA finals. Nike and David Stern are happy there will be some star power at the NBA Finals. Sorry, LeBron, maybe next year.
  3. Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 will be auto-tune free. Kanye calls it the anti-autotune album and that sounds very good to us. Read the rest of this entry »

As much as we have classic albums, we have overrated hip-hop albums. The word overrated is defined as; thinking something is better, stronger and more valuable than it really is. rundown copy The Weekly Rundown: March 30th April 5th

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.

1. Guru declares; “I am Gang Starr” ??? This just in: Above-average rappers who blew up thanks to a legendary producer need to shut up. Guru’s proclamation that he was Gang Starr is insulting to everybody on this planet. Does he not realize just how much he owes to Premo? PSA: Artists who feud with the DJ/producers never win; see CL Smooth

2. RUN-DMC get inducted in to the Rock & Roll hall of Fame. Congrats to the pioneers and a R.I.P. shout out to Jam Master Jay. I wish he was still alive to see it. We look forward to another induction when hip-hop has its own hall.

3. Hamilton-gate: Charles Hamilton beat-jacking Black Spade. We’re happy to see a negative scenario produce a positive outcome. Thank you, Charles, for giving us and others a reason to play Black Spade’s topnotch To Serve With Love again.
