One of BORN LIKE THIS’s best tracks gets the remix treatment across an entire EP, which is available now with remixes by Jneiro Jarel and Thom Yorke. And because Lex Records loves us, the label offered up this free remix by the Madvillainz, though no one knows exactly who that is — trust me, they even say that in their e-mail promoting this track. This “Gazzillion Ear” remix also features Kanye West as “Khan,” which makes for a whole bunch of craziness. Enjoy and let us know your thoughts.
It’s July. The year is halfway over, so I figured it’s time to take a look back at the memorable albums that have dropped so far in 2009. Just as a warning, I will be leaving several, if not many, records off this list that you might argue are worth mentioning. Well, if you feel that way, I urge you to leave a comment and try to convince me. There is also the chance that I might forget one or two records that I enjoyed, but simply could not remember as I wrote this.
Just swiped this first leak off the Jay Stay Paid project that will be mixed and arranged by none other than Pete Rock. The 25 track album will feature some of the industries finest emcees over unreleased and leaked J Dilla beats. Some emcees that I would like to note that will be on there; Raekwon, Blu, MOP, Black Thought, DOOM and more! You can catch the project in it’s entirety June 2nd, but I am sure that this will hold you over for the time being. Peep this stellar performance from Black Thought and let us know your thoughts on the project…
You may know him as Lil’ Sci, but he has become a force to be reckoned with under his government name, John Robinson. Working with DOOM, John put out one of my favorite recent releases with Who Is This Man?He has also worked with some of the industries best including Jneiro Jarel, Flying Lotus, J. Rawls, Carlos Nino, putting out classic projects like I Am Not For Sale, The Leak series and more. Today we welcome the wonderful John Robinson to Open Mic Presents… as we discuss recent business ventures, new music projects, collaborations and other exciting news!
Here is a preview, hit the skip for the full feature…
Reyn: Hey John, lets get it started with the release Who Is This Man? The title could mean a number of things, but to me it seemed as if you used it as a reintroduction for yourself into the hip-hop game. You have been emceeing for quite some time under the alias Lil’ Sci, but did you feel you needed that new push as an artist with this record? JR: Indeed it was time to Renew the history. The history must be renewed every 25,000 years! I am in a space and time where I feel although I have been doing music and traveling the planet for over a decade now. Lately I have been inspired probably more so than ever. I learned early on that you must continue to be innovative in this forum in order to stay relevant. John Robinson is here for the 2009 and Beyond! What’s up world!
Reyn: Briefly touch on the decision to drop the alias Lil’ Sci and go with the good old government name. JR: DOOM had a lot to do with my using the name John Robinson. Long story short when I would call DOOM’s house to build on Biz etc. my name would come up on the caller ID, so one day he tells me he has this Crazy Idea and he found some dialogue about a man name John Robinson and thinks we should do a Project with me using my given name. At that moment I was definitely fully ready to do the project just not sure using my real name was the best way. He assured me that he saw that name becoming household in years to come and even guided me in the transition of it all. The rest is OUR STORY!
It was all good just a year ago. Hip-hop was colourful like lucky charms cereal….lol I never quite understood the whole ‘Hipster rap’ phenomenon. Colourful clothing, 80’s samples and throwback old school vibe.
With Rock the bells 2009 lineup just being announced, I think we are all pretty excited for upcoming summer concerts. While I know most of us have been to some dope concerts, we can also recall some shows we’d rather erase from memory. Outside of The Roots, Common and few other hip-hop acts it is hard to say what your going to get at a hip-hop show. In today’s discussion poll we wanted to get your vote on the worst live performer. While some of the choices may seem out of place, the below names have come up in conversations so let us know.
