Yesterday marked the release of Donny Goines free LP, The Breakfast Club. A highly-anticipated medley of unorthodox hip-hop tracks, showing the more artistic side Donny’s rap skills. Switching up flows and rapping over up-tempo production is no match for this skilled emcee, most evident on his new LP, taking on a J.U.S.T.I.C.E. beat on one track and an old-school boom-bap on the next. But not only on the mic does Donny shine, he is also a skilled freelance writer, an extremely hard worker and a wonderfully humble person to chop it up with. With that said, please join me in welcoming Donny Goines to Open Mic Presents…

Reyn: Hey Donny, thanks for stopping by, how are things?
Donny: I’m cool man, can’t complain. Just working hard on the little things(attention to detail is very important in my opinion) surrounding my album release. The party, promotion, etc. Other then that though I’m in a real positive mind state. Feeling blessed.
Reyn: Congratulations on the new album, a very impressive effort! How did the recording process go?
Donny: It’s funny, because we actually knocked out this album in a month. I did the bulk of the recording in a 3 day session back to back, had many artists come by the studio and lay their verses and once I did all that we did touch up work (layed a new verse here and here, make edits, etc.). Making this album was really fun to me and that’s evident in the music I believe. Now that Minute After Midnight is in the archives, I can really spread my wings musically and just have fun with it. So in short, the process was was something I really enjoyed this time around.
Reyn: The lyrical content on the album is very interesting. You have some fun, light tracks on there, but you also touch some very serious topics with your raps. Talk about the balance of rhymes on the album and some of the major lyrical themes that you incorporated.
Donny: With this project the point was to show versatility but also, a different side of me that the public might not know exists. Honestly speaking, I’m a very carefree type of person. Yes I have problems and issues I deal with like everyone else but I try to keep a positive demeanor through it all and that’s what I wanted to exhibit on this album. There are some serious topics I address and my content, no matter how light is still lyrical but I felt it was time to show the people a more lighter side of me. Even when you look at something like the album cover, that should give you an indication of my direction on this project. I’m just having fun.
