Video: DJ Spinna – “Get On Down” feat. Homeboy Sandman, P.SO & Fresh Daily

The legendary DJ Spinna dropped his solo LP, Sonic Smash a few months back. Personally, I thought there were a few fresh cuts, but something about it just came up short. But this song in particular was one of those few that was kept in my rotation to this day. Featuring the homies Homeboy Sandman, P.SO and Fresh Daily, this boombap of a track is one for the hip-hop ages. Give it a view and let us know what you think…

Concert Review: Plug Research CMJ (BLVD)

Heading off to the next CMJ event, but I wanted to get these pictures posted from the Plug Research event last night. Some of my all-time favorites were in the building, including Bilal, Blu & Exile, Shafiq Husayn, Pharoahe Monch, J.Rocc, DJ Spinna, Large Professor, Blu Jemz and more. Don’t have time right now to write a full review, but check out the pictures for now and check back soon!

Open Mic Presents: Fresh Daily (Interview Series Ep. 26)

fresh dailyBrooklyn native and AOK Collective member Fresh Daily is a relatively new name on the scene, but he’s already making major waves. His debut album, The Gorgeous Killer In Crimes Of Passion, is now available and has been receiving terrific reviews across the board, including 4 Potholes. He brings a very fresh (no pun intended) approach to music, using his lyrics to express personal narratives. Fresh Daily took the time to talk it up with Potholes about his new album, his background and his love for the art. Check it out:

Alistair: How are things going? What have you been up to lately?
FD: Been working mainly, trying to figure out how to maintain people’s good vibes and interest. It’s been a little bonkers for me.

Alistair: Your album, The Gorgeous Killer In Crimes Of Passion, has been getting very positive reception from fans and critics alike. As an artist who has put in a lot of hard work, how does it make you feel to hear praise for your music?
FD: Anyone who knows me can tell you I’m the black Larry David. I feel like when HBO was planning Larry David’s comedy special. Do you remember that episode of “Curb…”? Well honestly, it’s overwhelming. I kind of didn’t expect people to really be in love with my album as much as I was in love with my album. It’s a blessing. I put my all into my art so it’s nice to see a good return.

The Weekly Rundown (July 13-20th)

rundown copy The Weekly Rundown (July 13 20th)

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.

  1. Mayer Hawthorne debut album A Strange Arrangement gets a release date and a pre-order. It’s easily the first Stones Throw release we’ve anticipated in a number of months.
  2. Q-Tip is working on a tell-all book called Industry Rules. The new book is supposedly autobiographical and frankly, we can’t wait to read it. “Industry rule #4080, record company people are shady” © Q-Tip
  3. Dave Chappelle puts on a free show in Oregon. Is he ever going to officially come back? We understand the fame and all that was bothering him. But come on, Dave, the comedy world is weak as hell without you.

It only makes sense that this free mixtape from DJ Spinna drops after soulsupreme and I were just talking about the producer after he tweeted a remix of Busta Rhymes’ “Abandon Ship”. This mixtape is essentially a collection of joints Spinna has remixed over the years and includes De La Soul, Das EFX, Sadat X, Ed O.G., and many, many others. This is sure to be a mix many of us will spin (no pun) this summer as Spinna’s mellow remixes are perfect for those breezy, sunny afternoons. Props to HipHop DX. Hit the jump for the full artwork.
