We already knew that these guys can all kill it, but it is great to see them all in such close quarters having such a great time. All laughs here, as Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire screws up his raps, Despot gets his name mispronounced, and El-P calls out instrumental solos throughout his performance. All-in-all, this is a 25-minute video that you are not going to want to miss. Give it a spin below.

(7/12/12)" data-recalc-dims="1" />Ever since El-P and his cohorts took their mayhem-wielding show on the road, word quickly spread that the Into the Wild tour had reached “Show of the Year” status. And how could it not? Armed with a cast of talented but sonically varied artists supporting two of the best albums of 2012, we just had to be there when the tour rolled through Rhode Island. Coming on the tail end of their two-month tour, the show had a decidedly punch drunk (and actually drunk), celebratory feel.

Queens’ Despot opened up the affair, bringing banging beats from Ratatat, Blockhead and his Def Jux-era tracks like “Crap Artists”. And yeah, we’re still waiting to hear his huge voice on an album already.

As soon as Despot was done, Mr. Muthaf*ckin’ eXquire picked up the mic. He quickly shed his shirt and broke into his grimy, foul-mouthed east coast rap with He also shared early on he was feeling “drunk and happy.” It was that kind of night.

Next was Killer Mike, who performed tracks from R.A.P. Music and crowd-pleasing cuts like “Never Scared” and “The Whole World.” He frequently interspersed political messages not exactly lost on the R.I. crowd. The state has the country’s second highest rate of unemployment (Nevada).

Finally, El-P took the stage, blasting out cuts from Cancer For Cure. His production sounds impressive on the album, but to hear it getting cranked in a venue is a whole new level. He also spent several moments acknowledging the crowd, local rappers in attendance (namely Sage Francis and B. Dolan), even his tour manager. Class dude, considering he has the best album of the year so far.

You can view a slideshow of photos from the show below.

Fat Possum Records: 2012

“I wouldn’t want to be a part of any club that would have me,” El-P offers on his stellar new album Cancer for Cure. Let’s consider this statement for a second. What clubs has been associated with during his storied career? El-P has always been a great team player. From his beats for masterpieces like Cannibal Ox’s The Cold Vein (which still ranks as my all-time favorite rap album) to Aesop Rock’s Labor Days from his days as head of Def Jux–he has provided a generation with a distinctive soundtrack. And, then you consider his groups, Company Flow and The Weathermen. Wikipedia even tells how important he is. And when does Wikipedia lie? Really? Not when it counts.

We are truly lucky that he allows us, the audience, to be a small part of this club. This album, his first solo effort since 2007’s I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, represents a strong mission statement from one of hip hop’s most distinctive voices in both lyrical content and production. This new album feels like an extension of legacy (which he would probably never want to discuss or acknowledge). (Hyperbole alert ahead.) No one has done more to push hip-hop ahead.

The album kicks off with foreboding buzz of “Request Denied” and leads naturally into the album’s first single, “The Full Retard”. The uncomfortable song title, which is an allusion to Robert Downey Jr.’s black-face character in Tropic Thunder, features the repeating refrain of, “You should pump this shit, like they do in the future.” That could be taken as a mission statement for El’s complete catalog. His work always features well-placed samples that demonstrate his master mining capability and fondness of science fiction-inspired blasts.

And like past El-P and guest efforts, C4C features exemplary work a slew of unexpected sources. Paul Banks of Interpol, Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire, Danny Brown, Killer Mike, Despot, and Nick Diamonds all guest star. eXquire and Brown are featured on standout “Oh Hail No” and the trio is a perfect team and marriage.

El has never sounded better. In interviews, he has stated this release could be his most life-affirming work yet, but that must be taken in perspective. You still have the questions of self-doubt and swirling bouts of mortality. But, what sets Cancer for Cure apart from his past efforts is the challenge El is setting out for the audience. He is offering his insight (and what some might call wisdom), and telling us to find a cure for our own cancer and also the blight of our fucked up society.

Aside: Danny Brown steals whatever he is associated with. His guest verse on Cancer for Cure stands as one of the true highlights of the entire release. Following in the footsteps of Killer Mike and El-P’s fantastic R.A.P Music, Brown and El need to hook up. Could you even imagine the awesomeness of Brown spitting over a beat like “Scream Phoenix”?

Tricked out with a video projection screen, an effects microphone and a plethora of guests, Das Racist had the look of legitimate rap outfit. Then the reggaeton airhorns effects ring out and it once again became unclear exactly who the joke was on.

Welcome to a Das Racist show.

The trio’s ability to cheekily flip the script and unveil the unexpected was on full display last night in a lightly attended but highly entertaining concert. Early on, the group memorably mashed both “Relax” and “Shut Up, Man” over 50’s “21 questions” beat . The latter in particular was a stark contrast to the booming El-P-produced album version.

In another example of their art-rap meets meme-machine Internet culture, DR had the audience chanting the names of past Batmans (from Keaton to Bale), an exercise lifted from the song “Berserker”.

The evening’s energy was at its highest levels when the group delved into their more raucous numbers. “Who’s That? Brooown!” went over particularly well as one could safely assume there were some Brown University students in the audience that took to the song with particular panache.

The beat for “Rooftops” banged loudly, assisted by a booming verse from opener Despot. And as one might expect, the Onyx-meets-oxycontin energy of “Michael Jackson” was a highlight.

The lone complaint here is that too often the group descends into “lyrical etceteras,” replacing their slick and complex rhymes with drunken garbles. They can deliver the rhymes but they’d rather ad lib, almost insulting you for caring more about their lyrics than they do. But such is the post-irony-meets-meta realm in which DR thrives – and in which they ultimately win you over.

The show concluded with the posse cut “Power” and an encore of the “Huzzah” remix, both featuring Despot and fellow opener Danny Brown. And it’s around then that it becomes abundantly clear, when Heems is singing “All my friends be rapping…Wake up like, ‘What happened,’” that Das Racist conclusively put the full stop on anyone questioning if they are serious about their craft.

The diminutive Despot impressively opened the night, bringing with him a braggadocios baritone and a rapid-fire cadence. He did his best to get the crowd involved, despite feeling “like shit” and noone in the audience knowing his material. A former Def Jux signee, (“I sunk the label by not putting out an album. It’s all my fault.”) Despot is working on a full-length produced largely by Ratatat and his complex internal rhyme schemes broadcast well over the heavy, booming beats.

Danny Brown took the stage second with his unique delivery and (#)style in full effect. His hypeman Dopehead worked the audience but it was clear from the onset only a few cats in the audience were familiar with the Hybrid oeuvre. Undeterred, Brown went in on XXX stand-outs “Die Like A Rock Star”, “Monopoly”, and “DNA”, to name just three. Brown excels by reveling in the uncomfortable extremes, (“My dick so big, left stretch marks on her jaw,” he brags on “Detroit 187”.) an experience made even more memorable by the intimate venue.

It’s nice to see one of the dopest indie labels in all of music hit us with some big moves here, upping the ante for competitive companies like Rhymesayers who have been absolutely killing it in 2009. It’s also nice to see Ratatat getting down with more hip-hop acts, we know they have the capability of producing some real bangers. We also hit you with Part 1 of “Sloppy Joe” from Danny last week, so here is Part 2 for you to get jiggy with. And as an added bonus, hit the skip to check out the video from the new Def Jux signee, Chin Chin, and their song, “That’s Where I’ll Be”. I actually checked these guys out live last week in Prospect Park, definitely a band you should be checking for in the months to come!
