Various Assets – Not For Sale: Red Bull Music Academy London 2010 [Compilation]

rbma Various Assets – Not For Sale: Red Bull Music Academy London 2010 [Compilation]I guess I can thank (insert random deity) for #thatsite as I probably would not have stumbled across this compilation without its help. Red Bull Music Academy has put together this free compilation of tracks from artists who participated in the 2010 event in London. And that equates to 41 free tracks from a slew of cats ranging from Oddisee to TOKiMONSTA to Dam-Funk, who all collaborated with other artists to create exclusive new cuts for this project. As an Oddisee fan, I’m mostly looking forward to his features, such as “Jackin4Beats Pt. 1″ that features him spitting over a 00Genesis production. The only shitty part about all this — I had other albums I planned on listening to today. Thanks a lot, RBMA.

You can stream “Jackin4Beats Pt. 1″ below and download the whole damn compilation after the jump.

Dam-Funk – “Hood Pass Intact” f. MC Eiht

Dam Funk Dam Funk Hood Pass Intact f. MC EihtLike many of his Stones Throw brethren, it’s hard to believe that this dude ever sleeps. I mean, he released the ’80s-funk-hip-hop, five-part epic, Toeachizown, just last year. And since then, Dam-Funk’s been dropping unreleased tracks here and there on his Twitter account. He’s also apparently been working on this brand new 12-inch EP, Hood Pass Intact. We have the title-track here for all of you to enjoy and lose your mind to, a reaction I know I have whenever hearing his bugged funk insanity. It’s pretty much similar to the original heard on Toeachizown Vol. 4: Hood, though it offers new vocals from MC Eiht, of Compton’s Most Wanted. For more information on the EP, go here.

You can stream “Hood Pass Intact” below or download it after the jump.

Dam-Funk – “A Day at the Carnival”

Dam Funk Dam Funk A Day at the CarnivalAt this point it’s pretty clear that out-there artist Dam-Funk has become a regular here on Potholes. We can’t help but dig his ridiculously catchy take on funky ’80s electro-hop, even if it can get a lil’ corny at times. But what the hell, the ’80s were nothing but cheese, cheese, and more cheese, so that’s kind of irrelevant. It gets your ass shakin’ and rids your mind of inhibitions, kind of like a good drink. Anyway, here we have the latest leak of L.A. label Proximal Record’s new compilation, Proximity One: A Narrative Of A City. Dam’s track, “A Day at the Carnival”, sounds a lot like its title, with heavy layers of funk, 808s, and off-the-wall grooves.

Master Blazter – Blazt Off Mixed by DJ Kutmah

Dam Funk Master Blazter Blazt Off Mixed by DJ Kutmah

Last night I was hit with an awesome surprise, an 18-song mix of Master Blazter goodness! You may not recognize the name Master Blazter, but from looking at the picture above, I am sure you can gather that the legendary DâM-FunK plays a role. Along with the master of funk, Computer Jay and J1 join forces to become Master Blazter. All known for their solo performances, the three come together to create some of the funkiest boogie music to ever hit my ears. But Blazt Off is a bit different, as DJ Kutmah cuts up individual solo tracks from each of the artists to give us an idea of what they sounded like before forming the group. I am assuming we can expect some of the collaborative work to follow shortly after. Hit the skip to check out a bunch of goodies I included in the post along with the download link. Enjoy!

Video: Dam-Funk Interview

LA Weekly‘s Jeff Weiss sits down with L.A.’s “Ambassador of Boogie Funk,” Dam-Funk. The Stones Throw signed selector recently released his five-LP (two-CD) debut, Toeachhizown, jam packed with two hours of the hardest hitting space boogie funk this side of the universe.

In this interview Dam-Funk talks about what inspires him as an artist, his favorite records, and why he wanted to add a different flavor to his live performances. The video was shot, edited, and produced by Jessica Rew and features clips from an electrifying performance by Dam-Funk at the Cinespace in Hollywood.

It’s a slow-ass Monday today, but at least we got some funky freshness from FS to brighten the mood. Kenny’s always posting the good stuff over there and we wanted to share it with those who might not wander to his site just yet. This is a mixture of the Hawthorne Headhunters (Black Spade, Proh Mic, and Ced No) and Stones Throw’s Dam-Funk. They have combined for a dope little number full of great bass, sparkling synthesizers, and handclap-driven, hi-hat heavy percussion. Grab the track and, of course, let us know what you think.
