Top 25 Albums of 2000-2009
It’s no secret that hip-hop is in constant motion – it changes year to year. Emerging technologies combined with the fickle needs and wants of the industry, the artists, and the fans, all play a role in shaping our musical world. Some of the changes to the hip-hop scene have been, well, less than desirable (see: the decline of radio rap). However, the past ten years, 2000-2009, still held releases of some of the most creative and unique hip-hop albums of all time, with an ever-expanding range of sub-genres. Traditional hip-hop rooted in the golden age of the ’90s was certainly alive and well, but it was sharing chart space with newer, progressive styles. That said, we have compiled a list of our 25 favorite hip-hop albums from the past ten years, as a form of celebrating the musical diversity in hip-hop from the decade that was.
Video: Clipse & The Roots – “Popular Demand” (Live)
The Clipse were on the Live With Jimmy Fallon show last night in support of their latest LP Till The Casket Drops. Backed by the Roots and more notably Black Thought, they delivered two incredible performances for “Popular Demand (Popeyes)” and the classic “Grindin”. Props to Yardie

Column: Hip-Hop Could Use Some More Groups
I’m really anticipating the new Clipse album dropping next month. After that we should have De La Soul, Reflection Eternal and The Roots all dropping in early 2010. Maybe its just me, but it seems like we have less groups in hip-hop right now that can have actual success in the underground and mainstream arena. This is a glaring trend in comparison to the last two decades. When I think of great groups like The Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest, the focus was less on who was the best emcee and more about how great the music was.

Here’s the latest banger from Virginia’s finest. Even though Til’ The Casket Drops got pushed back until Dec. 8th, this should definitely hold us over until then. Cam’Ron and Pharrell make some dope features on this one. Props to Eskay, yuck!

The Weekly Rundown (July 20-27th)

Welcome to the weekly rundown where we (soulsupreme and Marty) provide you with our top ten headlines for the week that was.
- Beastie Boys album gets pushed back, MCA diagnosed with cancer. Hopefully MCA makes a full recovery soon, which is expected since the cancer is treatable. There’s way too much death going on of late.
- Ma Dukes and J Dilla’s heirs succeed in legal battle. After all the hardships Ma Dukes has gone through with J Dilla’s estate since his passing, it’s great to know the right people will be receiving the money now.
- Method Man & Joe Budden squash the beef at Rock The Bells. It’s good to see petty beefs come to an end, but damn, a series of Slaughterhouse and Wu-Tang diss tracks would have been nice.
The Weekly Rundown: (April 27-May 4th)

- Guru releases a new joint of his latest Jazzmatazz compilation called “Fast Lane” Monotone meets autotune???!! Somebody get DJ Premier on the phone because this is turrible! © Charles Barkley
