He’s been hard at work since then putting together his new full-length album, Forgive, which is sounding excellent already. Its lead single, “Orange”, finds him collaborating with PIMB favorite Niva, who provides the ghostly vocals over the beautifully soaring production. You can stream the track below and contribute to Beat Culture’s fundraiser to put Forgive on vinyl here.

This release? It’s just as surprising and twice as good. Play the first song, repeat and get ready for some dance inducing electronic, free-your-mind, hip-hop beats. Oh, there’s a lot of water sounds too. I asked Sunik Kim, “What’s the significance of the water?” He says, “It ties it all together.” He either gave me the most philosophical answer ever or he’s saying it’s the string to his lofty balloon-like beats–keeping them from floating away into the sun. To all dreamers out there: this album is for you.

Throw on some headphones, play “Midori” and know what it’s like to relax after a hard days work. Now 17 years old, Sunik Kim is gearing up for his second big release, Tokyo Dreamer. At 16 he released an album that had blogs everywhere asking, “Who is this kid and where can I get more music?” Thankfully, he’s been churning out hip-hop inspired tunes that turn chill into slouch-on-the-couch-and-forget-about-your-troubles music. I’ve almost forgot what to write here because this song has me lost in it. The track is expansive employing static, distant vocals and smooth as butter piano chords.

Sunik Kim, a.k.a. Beat Culture, at 16 has released Goldenbacked Weaver and become a threat to electronic/chillwave/experimental artists everywhere. Reinventing several Beyonce tracks from “Halo” on “Westminster” to “Naughty Girl” on “Hesitate” they’re no longer pop, smooth radio hits, but nearly indistinguishable howls. His influences include Gold Panda, Burial and James Blake, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s spun a few World Class Wreckin’ Cru albums. The album isn’t free, but musically it is; it’s swirling like exhaust from speeding vehicles, open road, pedal to the floor music. I’d get pulled over at 16, all pimple-faced and scrawny as a broom. This kid pushes tracks past the limit with no regard for the rules, other than, buckle your seat-belt because it’s going to be a wild ride.
