If you were to judge “Alligator” based on its visuals alone, you might think the latest single from the Uncluded (Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson) was a goofball, upbeat affair. Quite the contrary, actually, as the track is a blistering look into issues surrounding hyper-sexuality and pornography. But to lighten things up—or perhaps get on their offbeat juxtaposition tip—the duo decided that the song’s video should just be them playing racquetball. Yeah. It’s weird but it also kind of works.

When we first heard that Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson would be collaborating together, we didn’t really know what to expect. But after further examination, it was clear that these two, despite having quite different styles, their creative output was perfectly similar. Discussing topics of mortality, family and friendship, these two quirky artists have created a drastically different blend of music from what we are used to. We think it came out pretty well, though, and you can now peep it in its entirety before it drops May 7 via Rhymesayers.

That means you’ll have a pretty damn good chance of seeing them perform if you live in the U.S. and portions of Canada. Their debut album, Hokey Fright, drops May 7 and you can pre-order it here. In February 2010, El-P announced that he was stepping down from his position as the head of Definitive Jux, the label he spawned with Amaechi Uzoigwe back in 1999. It should go without saying that things were vastly different back then, though they certainly weren’t any easier. El and Amaechi know that full well, because right from the jump they had to stretch out their label’s name from Def Jux to Definitive Jux following legal pressure from Def Jam. Additionally, they watched as some of their contemporaries, most notably Fondle ‘Em Records, closed up shop.

But it was a strong and extremely important run from 1999 through 2010 for Def Jux. The label became an underground stalwart during its time and who knows, maybe it will rise again when El feels like taking on the presidential role again. If not, the world still was treated to some of the finest underground hip-hop ever during those years and it’s with that in mind that we take a look back at our favorite Def Jux releases. Note: This list is not in order.

Making music that makes the listener actually feel good or positive about life ain’t easy. Too often, it comes across as contrived or childish, leaving the listener even more jaded than before. But every now and then, a duo like the Uncluded (Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson) comes along to shatter that stereotype with singles like “Delicate Cycle”. It’s a feel-good track with a playful, albeit meaningful, edge to it with some equally off-center visuals to boot. Watch below.

For the sixth year in a row, the almighty Rhymesayers Entertainment presents the Soundset Festival in Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minn. It takes place Memorial Day weekend, rain or shine, and features quite the hefty lineup of performers. You’ll find everyone on here from legendary DJs to gully underground spitters to more mainstream-leaning favorites. Genre-bending duo the Uncluded are back with some more new music from their upcoming full-length debut, Hokey Fright. Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson’s “Scissorhands” arrives as more than just your typical stream or music video, though. It features some absolutely killer fingernail art by Robin Moses, who showcases her skills while the undeniably fetching “Scissorhands” plays throughout.

The Uncluded (Aesop Rock & Kimya Dawson) – “Earthquake” [Video]

Well this is a nice surprise. We’ve got a new track and video from Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson entitled “Earthquake”. The two have released music previously as The Uncluded, including this cut that they’ve been playing out live. Kimya Dawson’s unique voice remains a perfect complement to Aesop’s signature head-spinning delivery. The track also got a much welcomed light-hearted video which you can check out below. Fingers crossed that more music from these two comes sooner than later.

UPDATE: The Uncluded will release their full-length debut, Hokey Fright, May 17 on Rhymesayers. The sole guest on the project is James McNew, of Yo La Tengo.

Aesop Rock – “Hall of Game” P. Blockhead

Back in 2000, Aesop Rock and frequent collaborator Blockhead were crafting tracks for what would be one of the finest albums of the aughts. That’s Labor Days, a widely heralded record that set the tone for Aes Rock’s career. While we’re more than 11 years removed from its release, the rapper-producer duo decided to share a leftover song, “Hall of Game”, that didn’t quite make the cut. Hmm, after hearing this and “Jinx“—another strong tune from cutting room floor—I’m starting to think they have more leftovers they could share with us all.
