9th Wonder returns with his second installment of the 9th Invented the Remix (AGAIN). 9th Wonder released his original remix project was back in 2003 after the success of Little Brother’s The Listening. The new mixtape has some notable hip-hop and R&B remixes. Some of the highlights include Little Brother’s – “Not Enough (More)” (9th Wonder STILL Ain’t Enough Remix), Tweet’s – “Turn Da Lights Off” (9th Wonder Oh No You Didn’t Remix) which samples Teddy Pendergrass’ “Turn Off The Lights” remixed with 9th wonder’s drums. Some of the other R&B remixes were a bit underwhelming, but he did remix “Wordplay” by A Tribe Called Quest so there’s still a lot to like on here. Please let us know the what you think. Props to Eskay

We have been bringing you the leaks off this DJ Chong Wizard mixtape over the past few weeks, and today we get to hear the full project. Featuring an all-star lineup of cats like Moka Only, Muneshine, Del The Funky Homosapien, and more, KN & TM came correct! From the looks of it, this project has been a work in process, as Kev collected hundreds of submissions of Tribe remakes, eventually coming up with this tasteful mix. Give it a spin and let them know what you think!

Here is a nifty cut from Moka Only and Bootie Brown coming of KN’s Tribe tribute mixtape. The two team up as The Googlenaires, which I don’t understand. Help me out Moka! Anyway, this is their rendition of “Skypager” off The Low End Theory. You can cop the full mixtape January 1st, which will be mixed by DJ Chong Wizard.

I’m really anticipating the new Clipse album dropping next month. After that we should have De La Soul, Reflection Eternal and The Roots all dropping in early 2010. Maybe its just me, but it seems like we have less groups in hip-hop right now that can have actual success in the underground and mainstream arena. This is a glaring trend in comparison to the last two decades. When I think of great groups like The Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest, the focus was less on who was the best emcee and more about how great the music was. Read the rest of this entry »

In hip-hop the visual medium used to add a different element to a great song. Whether it was “Scenario” by A Tribe called Quest or “Put Ya Hands Where My Eyes Could See” by Busta Rhymes, they added a dope aesthetic that heightened and brought the music to life. For some reason that no longer seems to exist in hip-hop. Read the rest of this entry »

With the commercial success of so many hip-hop acts in the last eight years it got me to thinking whether the term “selling out” in hip-hop even applies nowadays. Q-Tip once said; “rap is not pop, and if you call that then stop“, let’s just say 91′ was a long time ago. Read the rest of this entry »

Just like the late great Jay Dee, there are always certain artists that go overlooked for the timeless hip-hop they`ve contributed to. I wanted to take time out this week to discuss the soulful, angelic voice that is Vinia Mojica. Read the rest of this entry »
