Danny Brown Breaks Down ‘The Hybrid’

danny brown Danny Brown Breaks Down The HybridWhen Danny Brown dropped The Hybrid earlier this year, I think I can safely assume I wasn’t the only one surprised that it was a free release. Well, as it always seems to go in hip-hop these days, the record wasn’t necessarily intended to come out that way. But due to confusion, delays, and perhaps even industry rule #4080, Brown was basically forced into dropping his fantastic 2010 album for free.

And now we can find out exactly why that happened along with insight from Brown on how and why each track from The Hybrid was recorded. Personally, I’m pretty damn glad he decided to do this as the album just seemed to drop and that was that, though of course there was plenty of positive press following its release. But even so, I always wanted to know more about The Hybrid.

If you’re like me and want to know more about one of 2010′s craziest albums, go to Danny Brown’s tumblr, where he breaks it all down. Hit the skip to download The Hybrid if you haven’t yet. You can stream “Re-Up” below.

14KT – Random Tracks [Compilation]

14kt 14KT Random Tracks [Compilation]I was perusing some of the better sites out there the other day when I landed on We’ve Got the Jazz, which happens to feature one of the better names in all of the unholy Internets. They had posted a collection of tracks from Detroit artist 14KT’s SoundCloud account that essentially ran the gamut from his work with Danny Brown to his remixes of the likes of PPP and Erykah Badu. Considering how much we dig KT’s stuff here at Potholes, I just had to post it just in case you might have missed it elsewhere. I know it’s a little cumbersome downloading these tracks individually. But come on, free music from 14KT? Deal with the frustration.

Hit the skip to download the tracks and stream his remix of PPP’s “On a Cloud” below.

Magestik Legend – To Be Continued…Chapter 1

magestik legend Magestik Legend To Be Continued...Chapter 1Yeah, yeah, yeah. This mix has been out for a lil’ while now. I know. But it was until yesterday that a version was released with separated tracks. Perhaps Magestik Legend realized that my Last.FM-addicted-ass wasn’t down with scrobbling one long mp3. Or — this is more likely — he realized that a tracked version just works better. Either way, this is more of that dope Detroit hip-hop you need to have in your life sooner than later. I just hope we can another official project from Magestik. I mean, I appreciate stuff like this, especially considering the quality of music on To Be Continued…Chapter 1. The mere fact he’s got production on here from Astronote, Bean One, and 14KT is reason enough to check this out and be satisfied. But I’m just saying I’d like a proper record.

Hit the skip to download To Be Continued…Chapter 1 and stream “Day Break” below. And don’t be afraid, the Bandcamp doesn’t require you to pay for this. Just enter a zero in the payment option. Or you could be a good person and donate some funds.

Flip – “Problem” feat. Buff1 & 14KT

Buff1 Flip Problem feat. Buff1 & 14KT

This is a heater! The homies Buff1 and 14KT team up with Austrian producer/rapper Flip, for the single “Problem”. According to Flip himself, he is responsible for the production, the scratches and the mixing, along with his verses, which are in German. That is pretty nifty for a name I have never heard of before. Moving on, can we talk more about this beat? With some heavy hitting drums and samples, it is almost like this dude has been living in the D for years. And we can’t forget to mention Buff1 and 14KT who both come correct with some stellar raps. Flip’s solo album Umberto Ghetto, will be available soon via Urban Umpires/ABB distribution.

14KT 300x226 Download: Now On Im Sayin (14KT Random Horns Remix) Feat. Aloe Blacc [mp3]Words by 14Kt; Exclusive remix I did for my brothers, a group called Now On off “The Willows EP” released exclusively on Japanese label Subcontact in 2007. Originally, the track had Ty of Ty & Kori on it. Now On decided to add Stonesthrow artist Aloe Blacc, to give the track a different feel from the original. I remember making this remix in like 15 minutes! That’s a record for me! In the first version of this beat, I added some random horns at the end of the track to give it that classic ol’ school jazzy Hip-Hop feel. I chopped the same horns that were used in a track I did for Buff1 called “Pretty Baby” in 06′. Its funny cause they don’t sound alike. Please give it a spin and let us know what you think.
