Australian boom-bap assassin Ta-ku came through Bandcamp last week with Dusty Vol. 2, a sequel to his killer January release. Again, Dusty is not just a clever name, as there’s clearly a warehouse full of obscure, forgotten jazz and soul vinyl he’s sampling from to cobble together these beats. Analog bass and old-school canned strings are front and center here, with the subtle party-time vibe of Dusty’s previous volume taken up just a notch.
Ta-ku’s last Dusty tape is groovy music for backyard chilling with some friends, and Dusty Vol. 2 is the logical next step for the evening, once the mixed company and mixed drinks start becoming a factor. If snappy drums and excellent AM radio-era classic soul is your thing, then Ta-ku’s got you covered here.
