West Coast instrumental producer extraordinaire Suhnraw’s new project opens with a snippet of “Raw Shit”, from the seminal Jaylib album Champion Sound, which features Talib Kweli triumphantly declaring a deep affection for that raw shit. This Suhnraw tape proceeds to spend 19 more tracks wordlessly convincing the listener that this was not, in fact, an empty promise. Raw indeed, as most of these are quick sketches of beats clocking in under ninety seconds a piece, but the drums snap, the synths shimmer and the dusty, mildewed samples are certain to impress.
Prolific but never poorly thought-out, Suhnraw is one of a number of producers who’ve been visibly maturing and getting smoother, more focused and original in 2012 across a number of releases, and if his beats continue to improve at this rate, he’s going to be massively influential before we know what happened.
