Submotion Orchestra – “It’s Not Me It’s You”

submotion orchestra Submotion Orchestra Its Not Me Its YouLeeds-based live-band bass music monsters Submotion Orchestra just let a preview of their next single slip via Soundcloud. “It’s Not Me It’s You” takes them out of the smoky jazz cabaret territory where they spent most of Finest Hour, their awesome 2011 LP, and brings them straight to the dance club, where the formidable rhythm section of drummer Tommy Evans, percussionist Danny Templeman and bassist Chris Hargreaves lay down a nimble, tech-y two-step influenced beat and singer Ruby Wood goes full-on dance diva.

Forward-thinking producer Ruckspin appears to have learned some new tricks from his 2011 collab album with London’s Jack Sparrow as Author, as he eschews his typically sparse, foreboding production sensibilities for a busier, more electrified aesthetic reminiscent of Sparrow’s solo work on Tectonic. This is pure Submotion above all else though- the band is vacuum-sealed tight, Wood’s vocals are perfectly on point, and the whole thing explodes into a tastefully rowdy trumpet solo just as you start to have trouble believing this could be a live band.
